Feeding young pup

Post by coolbrze »

I've got a 7 day old pup here that the mother discarded yest. and we're feeding her Esbilac milk supplement, about 4 cc every couple hrs. Is this enough or too much? Any other tips or suggestions?

Steve,

Are you giving it through a bottle or tube feeding? If it is through a bottle let it have all it wants. It will quit eating when it gets full. Tube feeding, I have seen it vary with each pup. some you have to increase the amount to keep them from waking you up every 2 hours. My vet told me 8-10cc to start.

Thanks! We're feeding via a syringe (no needle) right now. Also wiping her rear to simulate the mothers actions to get her to go to the bathroom.

Go down to the nearest store and buy a baby bottle (human) with a slow flow preemie nipple. If you can't find the preemie nipple then just a slow flow will work. Use the esbilac, canned goats milk or canned evaporated cows milk (Do NOT dilute) and let it drink all it wants from the bottle. Are there other puppies? Why do you think the mother doesn't want it?

Sometimes when you start with bottle feeding you have to open the mouth and put the nipple in to get them going but, beagles are excellent bottle nursers.

She's doing well, not sure why the mother doesn't want her, there were 9, we lost 2, she and the others are doing fine. We're now feeding w/ a bottle, not syringe. Thanks & here's a pic of her today (7 days old):

We raised several pups on canned goats milk but we mix the milk with equal parts of water.

You should use the canned Goats milk full strength. Bitch milk is rich as is goats milk. Do not dilute it. You can use evaporated cows milk as well and do not dilute it either.

Have you offered the puppy back to mom? she may take her now and raise her.

Luke - unfortunately we lost her this Sat. I wasn't surprised, I'm sure the mother knew something we didn't, we had been bottle feeding her for 8 days and she was doing well though. We were 4/4 bottle feeding last time, the gyp ended up raising 8 of 10 pups, but we had to help 4 along the 1st couple weeks.
