overweight beagle

hey guys i have a problem ive got a female beagle that im not runing much do to the heat and everything around here and she's what i call an easy keeper heck ive got her down to a half cup of feed and she still fatter than a horse don't really know what to do. was thinking about trying these new weight manegement pill they have out now see if that would slow her calorie intake down cause i really don't know how to trim this old girl up any ideas.

We have one the very same way, found she was eating pears in the back yard.... Dang dog will eat anything that won't eat her.

Make sure there isn't anything that she can eat, check for fruit nuts, another dog throwing up, they have a way of making another dog in their kennel regergitate also...

cut the food, look at the calorie and fat in that brand of food, I do know that our dog seemed to go down hill health wise, (This one is an older dog though, but have another that is worse and is young) on the fat dog food so took her off that and just reduced the servings.

Ad saltless canned green beans to fill the tummy....

This is about the only thing I can say besides exercise. Exercise is the best, but I know full well it isn't always possible.

**Tie a pork chop to the handles of the tred mill and set her on it for an hour a day LOL....

hey thanks for the advice ive never had a beagle thats this easyof a keeper all 5 of my other hounds and nice and lean and everytime someone see's her they ask if she's pregnant. now during rabbit season when i was cool and i was running her alot the weight stayed off but i always noticed if i left her up more than a week that shed start getting hefty but im going ot have to try something. may sty one of those weight manegment dog foods lol and the doggy diet pills ill remeber the pork chop thing may have to try it lol.

Good luck. I have one that gains weight on air. (LOL) I just figured out mine was filling all the bowls in her pen up with gravel after I leave the kennel which deters the other dogs from eating their food which allows her to go back and pick the food out at her leisure. (Sorry Ho) LOL

Get her out and run her, even if it is just in the yard.
Put her on a lower protien food. They don't need the hi-pro unless they are run alot, or in very cold weather.
Exercise is the only thing I have known to work.
Fruits shouldn't put weight on a dog unless it is eating it by the pound.

Silverzuk she was eatin them as fast as they fell out of the tree. And yes they do put the weight on they are loaded with sugar...

im going to take her to a buddys pen tommorow night and run her butt about 6 hours. as far as feeding the high pro in the hot weather i like the feed and the dogs love it so im not changing plus i get a deal on it and if i quiet buying it then that will knock me in the head on that.

Boomer , I don't know much but I have a small prob 11in female that's the same way and a male that's close . I start at about 2 cups for a hound in good shape and will drop or raise the ammount of feed daily according to how my dogs body looks . The little female is down to just a little over a handful and still looks healthy with a nice shiny coat . It seems to me that the older hounds need less due to being less active in the heat . Each hound is a INDIVIDUAL ( not sure of the spelling) and I try to treat and feed them that way . I don't like to kennel my hounds together for this reason unless they each (the ones together) are maintaining (what I consider) close to perfect body weight . But what do I know anyways

yea its a real problem and what makes me mad the most is i have all my other dogs on self feeders and there lean and in some of the best shape ever. I ran her for about 6hrs the otherday may run her again in the morning where everythings so green its hard on them don't like haveing them cut up that bad right now lol when i came back the other day my lesage bill male his eyes where swollen shut they have a hard time right now.

I have 4 easy keepers together, their 6 cups of dry kibble gets spread out on the concrete floor to be eatten, this way, they have to pick up each kibble as a bit and they can't use their lower jaw as a shovel to scoop it up as they would out of a bowl, also no growling or fighting over the food spread out this way...

Sounds like a great idea . The ones that shovel are the problems causers most every time .

I didn't read all the replies. My male beagle is overweight too, I have to start walking him majorly! He had to get put on a low protein diet. It's not really helping any. I try to keep treats to a minimum too but he's still fat.

Exercise is the way to go and cut back on the feed. I have a female in heat that is not run alot but is in great shape. She can put on the pounds just as easy so I cut back to a cup of food, and she's maintaining. Since they are not being run so much, they don't require so much. As humans, I think we feel sorry for them and think it's cruel not to feed them as much as they like but they pay for it afterwards.
