I don't know about winning, but some have placed in the field class.

One that I know of is John Jesse's Moe.
He won the bench and placed (I think 7th).
Placing in the top 10 in the World Hunt is an accomplishment.

Jay Johnson won the bench show with a "field dog", I don't know where it ended up in the field.
Like myself, he is about field performance but knew the conformation on his hound is good on his "Cash" dog.

Larry Harrison's Paige placed top ten in the open class and I believe Paige is a bench champion. Her conformation is excellent.

There are people out there that are breeding performance and conformation with good results. Don McVay of Sundown Kennels is consistently placing at big UKC events in the field and the bench with the same dogs.

If you read a few thread in this section you will see there are people that are breeding field dogs with good conformation.

There is still a rift between people who breed show dogs only and the rest of the beagle world. I won't own one that will not perform in the field, but at the same time I do not want one with poor conformation. I see no point in breeding beagles that cannot perform, or do not have good conformation. IMO, you shouldn't breed if you are not bettering the breed.

There are a lot of fiests and terriers that can run a rabbit if that is all you want.

My Dutch dog has placed in the top 10 on the bench at the 3 Big Pack Worlds he was at. He won the open class in the field one year and won the combination bench /field the next and won the Grand Champ Class on the Bench the next. He was also in the top ten in the field on all 3 BP Worlds he was entered in. He won the BP All American in the Champion Class on the Bench also.

BUT PRETTY IS AS PRETTY DOES. I think conformation does help in endurance and speed. But its whats in the heart that wins hunts.

SilverZuk makes some excellent points,I might as well get my pennies worth in on this subject, a good one I might add. I am not certain how the ARHA mission statement is exactly written, but the crux of it is, to promote the "all around hound". That is why hounds 12 months of age and older, that are shown on the bench, "must" also run in the field, a good idea. However IMO, the ARHA does not apply this concept , to it's own Hound Of The Year award, because Bench Win points do not count toward HOY in anyway. Therfore, again IMO, ARHA does not really promote the "All Around hound".
I would like to see ARHA, review it's scoring policy in regards to HOY , and apply Bench points in some manner.
thanks for reading

I'm not a field trialer, but I like the idea of an 'all around hound". Nothing wrong with good hunting beagles that look good too.

i thought bench dogs did't mean anything to you ? i think that the pup that won best in show was the best dog up there . maybe you should get some of that in your kennle instead of " mr. wilson "
