Coyote attacks
If you have ever had a dog attacked, please answer these questions.
What time of year?
Day or night?
Does anyone hunt yotes in that area with hounds?
I'm curious.

It has happened to me twice. Daytime. Late Spring. (Pups were probably on the ground). No one that I know of hunts yotes with hounds in these two areas. Luckily, I was close enough to the hounds that the dogs did not sustain any serious injuries. I consider it to be low % rate considering that every one of my running grounds holds coyotes.
I live in Ohio.

twice 1 in summer early morning 2 mid winter mid day alot of coyote hunters, friend lost 6 good ones around his house in a 5 day period, he just thought they were running and his son lives down the road the dogs use both places to rest up. Ussually guys have the most trouble with them after dark coyotes have come right in on my dogs at night bells don't seem to deter them much. but haven't lost any in a couple yrs. knock on wood
The only dogs killed I know of were 3rd party accounts, usually in southern WV.
I have talked directly to friends that have coyotes come in yipping while their coon dogs were treed. They said they were all around making noise, but staying out of range of the lights. They got their dogs and left.
Those events occured last fall.
The only first hand experience is coyotes yipping while dogs were running a rabbit at night. No dogs attacked, but we are cautious.
We call the dogs in after each chase and if we have a split we try to round up the dogs into one group.
I always worry about a dog that is lagging behind or splits off by itself.

I have had 4 hounds get caught by Coyotes and two close calls. I have never had a hound killed but have had to put stiches in a hound once. I have also soloed hounds on two ocations and have had coytoes follow the dog 10 yards behind. Did not have a gun either time.
All my problems with Coyotes have been March though May. I run mostlly in the day time.

I have lost 2 to the yutes, one in mid summer and 1 in the fall. Have had many close calls, usually while soloing a hound. Had one this past fall come in to the hounds while we were running 6 hounds, he got within 20 yards of us (three of us, no gun) b/4 he saw us. I don't know if yutes can swear or not but I think we heard an O" s**t when he turned tail and ran. As a side note I run this spot often and have had no more issues with yutes there. I think we educated them to hounds and humans at that spot. Yes we have guys that run yutes with hounds, usually in mid winter when other seasons are closed, we also have wolf issues here but they seem to attack the big hounds more then beagles. just purchased a new 22-250 and rabbit squeal to try to do my part. November 2002-- 11:00 a.m. Female
She and a five other dogs were running. I heard a sound that I knew was not right and strating hollering and clapping. I ran to the scene and she had been bitten on the hip. She had only one puncture wound. No stitches required.
January 2007--9:00 p.m. Female
This dog was running solo with an unstarted hound on the ground. Both dogs were only 7 months old. Again I heard a sound that didn't seem right. I started making sounds and clapping. I found my dog hunkered down in the grass. I thought she was dead. I picked her up and she just went crazy. I thought she was hurt badly. She was bleeding. Once I got her in the light, she had just one puncture wound as well. No stitches required.
There are a couple groups of guys that hunt coyotes.
