AKC show beagles vs. UKC show beagles

Beagles in Show. Whether your beagle shows full-time in the ring or part-time at the field trials, this forum can be helpful and informative for those seeking better conformation in their beagles, and presenting them at their best to the judge.

Bill, Larry and TC, you guys sure have some nice looking hounds.

Just by looking at pictures it looks like to me that many of the dogs winning in UKC have more of a slim, racey build. They look like they could run fast and easily without wearing down.

The dogs that are winning in AKC seem to be more of a blocky, heavy boned type. They don't look like they are built for speed as much as the UKC dogs do.

There are plenty of exceptions but as a general rule that is how it looks to me. Is there anything to this or am I off base? (not the first time that has happened)

Nope Not off at all!!!
NICE observation...
The UKC dogs more FIT the standard (IMHO) than most of the AKC dogs kinda what I been tryin to say the whole time LMAO
The AKC dogs have more bone than the UKC dogs making them heavier and yes they are stockier and blockier in the head also To much angultion also making them appear to be kinda Choppy steppin you know that show prance.
not as much length of back So therefore not as much Spring to the rib. Some are also or appear to be deep chested wider in the front and so forth....
Thats THIS YEAR give em 6 mo to 2 years and they will be back to the smaller boned hounds again it kinda goes in cycles you know that Flavor of the month deal
I will say this i have Seen a lot more consistancy in Judging this past year or so though thats a good thing..
aThe UKC judges seem to be real consistant always looking for a good representation of the Working/ hunting hound
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

I personally don't see much difference between what places in AKC All-Breed shows and what some of you are placing in UKC Shows. Since the bloodlines you are mentioning are mostly from AKC show people (Echo Run, Shaw's, Vijam, etc), I'm not sure why you would expect anything to be different.

And I think you'll find that competition will make them even more similar over time, since those hounds with little bits of field blood in them will find it harder and harder to place in UKC shows as the level of competition increases. More and more AKC show lines will be used.

Let's not be too hard on the AKC show beagles, because that's exactly where the better UKC show beagles are coming from. Case in point would be the Strongbow Beagles, who have won just about everything the UKC has to offer. The conformation in their hounds comes from beagles bred from AKC show lines, mostly Echo Run. I'm not sure if Kathy Carling (Echo Run owner) has ever been to a UKC show, but she has been VERY successful in AKC shows.

THAT is funny. I have a friend with a white Standard poodle that she clipped and dyed as a pumpkin on year for Halloween.

The dogs in the UKC National and World hunt are primarily from the hunting beagle world. They do not yet have the excellence of some of the AKC show beagles. The process is in motion to develop total dogs that are excellent in both structure and hunt. It is a young program that is seeing great progress. Plenty of work cut out yet!

Like I said before, I used to show horses, so I know what it can be like competing. My downfall there, was my folks didnt have the money to buy the high end horses, tack, trainers, handlers etc. I competed against girls (and an occasional guy) that had 5 digit horses that they never even took a brush to. I worked my butt off in showmanship (99% grooming, 1% handling) with a grade horse and never left the ring without a ribbon.
That's the spirit!!!! Horsepeople make natural dog people too. If you have an eye for horses you'll have one for dogs too ;)

The difference is UKC show dogs are also hunting dogs. Most of the UKC dogs go to the feild and hunt the same day they show. That is why the UKC dogs look slim and fit.

Touchstone/Dan,

I have read your last post, at least 4 times. I would like to know what you mean by......"They do not yet have the excellence of some of the AKC show beagles."?

Please Elaborate.............

Bill
