Not trying to start an argument or nothing
but everyone is entitled to their opinions. What are the chances of producing a dog similiar to some of the great foundation stock without being able to line breed. It just seems it would be easier to trace the genetic code for desired traits by utilizing the names of said foundation stock to minimize the risk of outcrossing and watering down or losing the traits your after.

Feed and hunt what you like!
If you didn't see some of the greats run you have no clue if you are approaching a target or if you want to. If you have a male and female that consistently perform in a manner that makes you happy then you are better off breeding them than to breed to a Field Champion you have never seen run. In todays world, Field Champion of what? There is a thread on the espo board by Hunt6 referencing the chance of a good dog in one area winning in another area. A HOF beagle means what? All those HOF beagles were judged by the same rule book. However, that doesn't mean they run/hunt the same.
Look at the great dogs (as far as accomplishments) right now.Bunny Jumper wrote: What are the chances of producing a dog similiar to some of the great foundation stock without being able to line breed.
Most of those were not linebred dogs.
Line breeding stacks characteristics into a hound (both good and bad).
So that hound has a greater chance of performing, looking, sounding, and acting like other dogs in that line.
There have been some great dogs that were line bred on one side and outcrossed to another dog. That outcross produced better hounds than the line itself.
The biggest thing about line breeding is producing consistency.
Check out the pedigree of Branko's Jack of All Trades. I didn't spend a lot of time but a scan indicates that Mount Zion Pete is the only dog that shows up more than once in a five generation pedigree. Branko appears to have bred two dogs that he liked and started his bloodline. I have no idea how each succeeding generation conforms to his fountain head, Jack of All Trades, but it doesn't seem to affect his following since very few beaglers know how Jack performed.
Patch huh .
Boys I tell you what
We can just call all them Patch dogs "Jude" if you like . I actually think some hounds out there will make the name proud and some will just not show the type quality that goes into a good breed . Try line/inbreeding your Branko and other hounds for 110 years and see what you get
. Oh yeah , we can even put a $500 price tag on the pups . Fact is if you own the kennel name you could mix in ANYTHING you want and call it that particular name . EX. If Branko used a Patch or Northway hound to put more hunt , speed and body into their dogs we would probably never know it . Did I just rattle on

Wasn't that similiar to what I was asking in my earlier post about narrowing down the genetic cocktail by being able to trace lines via pedigrees in order to consistently produce the traits you are after? My next question would be is how consistent were/are the outcrossed dogs being referred to of reproducing their desirable traits? I'm all for bettering the breed by doing planned breedings in order to get what I'm looking for. I just don't know of a better way than linebreeding at this time. I'm not much of a gambler so I would prefer having better odds of the outcome before I make a cross and limit the possibility of crapping out with a roll of the dice

I think this stuff is cussed, discussed & over thought way too much. Just breed the best 2 dogs you own or can find, for what you want them to do. That way if you are happy, with the off-spring all is well. Fact is there ain't none of us going to better the breed , who are we bettering it for ? ourselves ? our neighbors ?
A man is gonna breed for what he likes & what I like may be total opposite of what John Doe likes, so what got better ? For who ?
Breed for yourself , I know I breed to try & get something that will out hunt, out handle & out perform everything else I already have. (ain't hard to do) To me that is the key, make your dogs better & don't worry about the ones you can't see from your on back porch.
Let other people call them whatever line they want too, that is not important anyway, dogs don't have a clue what name tag you pin on them.

I feel like plowboy been through alot of beagles all names speed hunt regerstered and grade dogs. found what i like. So now i have breed a female and male both dogs please me. the thing is will the pups i dont know but if they can run as good as there parents i will be happy. that's the risk we take. (the key is to run them pups alot they cant make nothing if they dont get out no matter how you breed them.) SO IS THE KEY BREEDING OR GETTING THEM OUT AND ON RABBITS???
