sore shoulder

Post by Jane »

Anyone have a hound that gets a sore shoulder? I have one that's about 9 months old, that seems after a run of 4+ hours gets very sore. He ran in when called after a 6 hour run on 3 legs. Got any remedy? He is alright at 3-4 hours. I am afraid if he keeps having pain, he won't want to run at all. Or direct me to info on that would be appreciated. He's a full 15" and weighs 30 lbs. Thanks

Jane, A few years back, I had a buddy that had a hound with the same problem. He took him to the vet and was told to completly lay him up for a minimum of 30 days. If you continue to run him you may do permanent damage to the shoulder. I'd suggest getting him to the vet to make sure though, and until then, I'd lay him up.

Thanks Beagleman63, I laid him up for a month because of it, I had a 3 hour solid run on him a week ago Sunday, he was fine. But today ( 8 days later ) same problem again.

dont now what kind of feed you are feeding but Purina One and Pro Plan has glucosamine in it it is supposed to help muscles and joints may want to try a suplement with this in it or Purina feed.

just a sugestion it may or may not help.

Thanks windsplitters, he's on a mix of proplan/signature feed. I am going to try to add in some glucosamine though, I have a friend that has some that I will also add to his feed, he suggested that to me last night.
He seems fine today but could not walk on it at all yesterday. I will lay him up again for a while and run him gradually and work up to a level that he can withstand and reassess if this is going to be chronic. He's large framed and has some weight on because I can't run him as much as the others with the soreness. He's still growing, so maybe that is affecting him as well ?

Jane sounds like he might have pulled his shoulder. Dennis's Maggie had that happen to her, also his Buddy dog. He had to lay them up for over a month and then start them back into it slowly. Took Buddy over six months to be completely healthy and not show any sign of pain after a long run.

Hi Shawn;
He seems fine, I think he just overdid it. I am just running him shorter hours with the pups and he seems A OK. I was just afraid that it would become a chronic problem. He's got some weight off and makes an improvement in his running. He just can't do the hard hitting with the big guns until he gets conditioned.
