What have you found to be some of Willet's best and failed crosses?
Dad Powell's dog Warney P, Willet claimed was his most distant and successful outcross. He also liked Zimmer's bitch Rosy Z and his stud Dare Devil.

As you quoted Macawac Fencer was one that he considered a failure.

But keep in mind this quote from him:

you can successfully breed together any two individuals, provided they have all or most of the qualities you are seeking to perpetuate, regardless of what blood relationship they may bear toward one another!

He did alot of heavy line breeding AND inbreeding cause he COULD. He bred roughly 75 litters per year. I am learning and researching and studying, but far far away from claiming I know what I am doing when it comes to breeding beagles. But at least give me credit for not just aimlessly tossing 2 of em in the back yard together and saying "have at it"

This was the Blue Cap from H. Card. These hounds were only slightly distantly related to Randall's patches, as Blue Cap & Blue Belle were English imports, as were Ringwood & Ch Loney. the same English blood which Randall's hounds descended. So in essence, Randall was bring the English blood back together that had been seperated after being imported to this country. If you look at the pedigrees, this was only after a couple generation. Gorman (Namrog) hounds were also Blue Cap and Randall had several good crosses with them, but it was all from descendants, going back to those same early imported english hounds.
I have a 1900' book by J.O. Paget that tells were he was sending hounds to America from the English packs around 1891.
As you quoted Macawac Fencer was one that he considered a failure.

But keep in mind this quote from him:

you can successfully breed together any two individuals, provided they have all or most of the qualities you are seeking to perpetuate, regardless of what blood relationship they may bear toward one another!
This quote was in reference to those questioning Randall's line/inbreeding methods. The way he was "wraping up the blood" within itself was thought to be taboo by those lacking genetic understanding.
Many would write to him asking for a breeding pair but stipulated that they must be no relation. He would reply, "these hounds must not be for you then, as the things are all related"...

There were few breeding beagles at the time and Randall was far removed from most. He tells us this was a blessing in disguise as it forced him to breed closer than normal and the importance of standard/selection and the true science of breeding animals. 75 litters was at his peak and only after the standard/selection/culling and setting the desired traits had become established.
He also tells us, we want the best to breed from but while one may not be all that we hoped for, it is the "family" behind the one you select that carries on into your puppies.
I remember Mr. Capozzi telling me, "I ask Randall why we were using Swifteagle Patch, as we had better performing stallion hounds in the kennel", Randall replied, "I know every hound in his pedigree back to Adam and if there's anything to this family and the powers of heredity, he'll make me a happy daddy".
Learn all you can, but when you read, read it completely as in the whole. Taking bits and parts out of context makes the soup unfit to eat... ;)

Touche`

I dont have alot of access to Patch studs around here. I have the only one within a couple of hours drive. I can honestly say, I still dont know who I am going to breed Lacie to this winter. I am probably going to have to go out of state. She is the full sister to Mike Eberle's Gunner.....

Tiffini,

If you're near central PA you could check out studs at the Lehners, Jim Campbell's or Darrell Shildt's.
