Suggestion for ticks

Post by NathanA »

What do you guys suggest for keeping ticks off of your dogs and well yourself. Other than seven dust what can I put around my lot. Is there anything special I could put on my kids when the go with me to run dogs.
Thanks
Nathan

Go to Wal-Mart and buysome Repel Permanone. You spray it on your clothes and boots and let it dry. It keeps ticks chiggers and everything else off. I never have any bites when I use this stuff. Hope this helps.

You can use any insect repellant that has over 25% DEET in it to keep ticks from getting on you. Also, you can use a product called Permonone or something like that on your clothes (DON'T PUT ON SKIN). Permonone is made especially to keep ticks off of you. As for the dogs soem of the once a month flea products will also keep ticks off of them

Beagler80 beat me too it - that (and other products with the same active ingredients) is the way to go! Use that on your clothing and "Off" type products on your skin if flying insects are a problem.

Ditto. Don't spray it on your skin though. Save that for OFF and the other types of Repel.

I use Sevin 10%, Frontline Plus, Eliminator, and Bayer Tree & Shrub on my dogs and around the kennels and have no problems here!

This is the worst year(for ticks) I have ever seen. especialy with all the below freezing we had this year.I have used bayer t/s no good. seven which I have used for years. two days later no good. I must have pulled 30 offf my dog tonight and I just cleaned him up yesterday. I am going to the vet tomorrow for some frontline and I will see how that works. Deet is bad for kids so make sure they dont get it on there skin. look them over good when you are done..

I have a map from another site that shows all the areas that produces lyme disease. mostly in the north east. your chances are like 80% if you get bit you will catch it.

I don't know about that. All the research I've done says you usually won't catch it unless the ticks been attached for a while.

Frontline Plus works great, but my guess is it will be expensive from the vet. Try Petsmegastore.com - they're based in Austraulia and their prices are hard to beat. I buy the extra large 6 dog pack and split them up between my beagles/labs. Just so you know, ticks will still bite the dogs, but they'll either let go or dry up and die.

I go back and forth between the Advantix and the Frontline Plus. I usually use the Frontline in the spring and fall and the Advantix in the summer since it also good agains mosquitos, the harbingers of heartworm.

Thanks for the replies. So if my chances are 80% of catching of lyme disease...how great is the risk for dogs... what will lyme disease do to them.

I was told by a paramedic that I worked with years ago that it takes 24-48 hours before you will be infected. Can't say if it is true or false though

A buddy of mine's hound has lyme disease. The vet told him that 25% of all dogs (not sure if just beagles or all dogs) that come in have it!

It depends on the type of tick that bites you or your dog. The common wood tick ( American dog tick) doesn't carry lyme desease as far as I've read. Its the Black Legged Tick (deer tick) you need to be weary of. It's real small and not easy to notice compared to the wood tick. This is the one that carries lyme desease. The wood tick can carry disease, just not lymes. There are other types of ticks but it depends on where you live as to what you have to deal with.
It's not that life is short......it's just that we're dead for such a long, long time...
