There are alot of folks that believe in bells. Im not one of them. This time of the year is when you have the most trouble with coyotes attacking dogs because the coyotes have young and the dogs get close to the den. The coyotes are protecting the young and it wont matter what the dogs have on if they get close to the den.
Sometime find a pair of wild geese with young and try walking up and catching one of the little ones and see what happens. After you heal up, put a bell on and give it another try. The result will be the same!

Now is the time of year to hunt them. Call in a nursing female and blast her and not only did you eliminate her you also eliminate her pups as well. They are going to take an easy meal or kill this time of year and dogs are the easy kill and a wounded rabbit is the easy meal. Set up a call box and watch those females come to it. I know for sure that once you start the call box you have to be ready to shoot.

I agree with the other fella's. I tried the bells a few years ago and one day I had a big coyote right on the tail of one of my dogs and that bell was ringing for all it was worth. If we had not been close I would have lost her. And I was getting annoyed at the sound of bells ringing all the time anyways.

I am one of those folks that Stoney was talking about.I do believe the bells work.I was having yote problems almost ever time out. They are some yotes that nothing will deter,I have shot at these things just to have them come on in,But after I started running the bells I have not had the close calls. When running @ night the yotes hear the ringing bell and associate it with Humans. And as for the Goose and its young,I have seen that but I have walked up to the sound of yote pups just to see the mother running the other way abandoning her young.
Jfields I live just across the river from you and I am sure that we run some of the same places.

We have very few coyotes up in Northern VA but I've seen a few in Southern VA. I don't have a lot of experience w/ bells, but have heard they keep coyotes/wolves away. I would think that a bell could also be ringing the dinner bell as well though...
