just wondering some thoughts on the black bag as a good puppy feed
i feed the black to my adult hounds and thought about trying the pups on it too
been feeding purina one they do good on it just a thought figured it would get some other thoughts on it

It is approved for puppies. I sell Black Gold so I feed the puppy 28/17, because I have access to it. My neighbors use the black with good results.

i feed it when they are out of trainers blend black gold,mypups are all older now so will be switching to the black.

i saw a pamplet at an akc hunt and black gold makes a 30/20 mix,i buy my dog food at tiptons on 93 in ironton oh.,boner says he can't get the 3/20,does anyone know anybody in so.ohio or northern ky that sells it?

I am feeding b/g signature pup. when this bag is done I will feed black bag.I talked to the owner up in vienna about a week ago and he said black bag was fine.

Yelp, me too. I don't switch. It has everything in it that a puppy food has. I was told by a distributor out in UT when I was in ID not to waste my money feeding the puppy foods, just use the black bag and they will be fine. It meets all the govt requirements for a puppy food.

Puppies need puppy food. Even if the protien and fat are the same it's not! There are additives in puppy food that puppies require for proper growth.

Not necessarily. A lot of puppy foods have too many calories and cause rapid growth of the faster growing tissue out of sync with the rest of the body. This can cause some pretty horrible deformities of the legs like splayed feet and weak pasturns. Even crooked legs.

If caught early these can be reversed by a change in diet. Plenty of protien is good but mega calories is not.

We tend to give our dogs too much supplementation in America. They actually do very well on a simple, but complete, diet.

Try Wellness, Canidae, Innova if you can afford it, or Purina Pro Plan (Purina One) formulated for All Life Stages. JMHO.

Well, Honey Pot

I tried feeding a litter Purina Hi-Pro to a litter. One pup could be held in your hand at 12 weeks old. She was taken to a vet and I was told not to feed adult food that pups need puppy food. We switched to Iams puppy food and with in 3 months she caught up to her littermates in size. So if you want to feed adult food to your pups go right ahead. Not me, not again.

Ain't it FUNNY how all of us are Feed Experts now since the Ole Diamond Fiasco last year????? I've got to agree about the puppy formulars being the best,,, mine were raised on Eukanuba Small breed puppy!!! Now the puppy formulars may be bullcrap,,, BUT GOOD BULLCRAP, sure Nuff!!!

Feed what you like. I haven't fed puppy chow to my pups since the 70's. I fed Purina High Pro for a long time and never had a problem. I now feed Diamond- Green Bag. The pups like it so well they will start eating it dry as soon as they have teeth. They start eating before they are weaned.

My dogs are born tough. They grew fine on Ol Roy High Pro.

I agree, I fed my pups pink flamingoes on a regular basis. Lost the entire litter

I was told that the BG 26/18 was fine to feed pups. I still feed Purina puppy chow, but my pups still manage to sneak a few bites of the BG black bag feed.

Come on peoples lets use some common sense. You would not feed your infant child the same food that you would eat. Babies need a certain amount of calcium, vitamins, minerals, etc, etc. Most babies are fed baby formula right?

I feed black gold but my pups eat puppy chow. Puppy food is formulated for their needs. Years ago I had a pup develop rickets because I was feeding them adult dog food. After a visit with the vet he prescribed him some vitamins and told me to change his food to a puppy food. It wasn't long before the pups legs straightened out.

My question is this, why pay your very hard earned money for a very well bred pup and feed it sub-standard food?

Puppies need puppy food.

Now I'll let you in on a secret. If you're on a tight budget, I'll give you a recipe to make your own puppy food.

Purchase a bag of calf maker from your local feed store. Sprinkle a teaspoon of dry calf maker over your 26-18 adult dog food. You have just converted your dog food into a puppy chow. The calf maker adds the calcium, vitamins and it also increases the protein and fat content of your food. I've been doing it for years. Now this will cause your pups to get big, so monitor the amount you give them. They don't need much.
