Coyotes - no problem

Post by TomMN »

Here where I hunt we have never had any trouble with coyotes bothering the beagles while we hunt. When they hear a hound the coyotes usualy clear out. Here's a good video that I think explains why.

By the way, this video was made in 'scosin but the coyotes get the same treatment here in MN.

The guy shooting the coyotes off the bale of hay was good. Not much of a shot though, missing them off a rest, then rattling another 3 or 4 rounds at them after the fact, finally getting the one that came back. Did you happen to notice what he was shooting though? A pump gun Remington 760 or 7600 probably. I guess those are typical results from a fella that shoots a 760/7600. I've known a dozen or more guys that used them, and they all shoot the same. When the deer runs out to them, plan on at least 4 shots, then a 50/50 chance they might have winged one, maybe. LOL

Do you always shoot the 'yotes or do you ever let the dogs finish them?

Watch that black dog with the bob tail. He almost always has a mouth full of fur!

Steve, the guys around here that I hunt with usualy shoot 'em unless the dogs catch them. There are a bunch of dedicated houndsmen around the country though that are dead set against shooting a coyote in front of the hounds. They think that if your dogs can't catch one and kill it then you need better dogs. These guys kill plenty of 'yotes also, they just do it the hard way.
