Now Diamond involved in Pet Food Recalls

Post by Honey Pot Hounds »

The Diamond issues specifically are in bold, last two paragraphs, for you who don't want to read through this whole long maddening post ;)

Well, now that Chinese melamine has found its way into human food
by way of California hogs, and the Chinese government isn't letting
the FDA into their country I'd love to
hear suggestions about how you think American
consumers should proceed.

Is it time for a million pup march on Washington? The media would
love the great shots from their Eyes in the
Skies helicopters, but most likely the walk wouldn't accomplish
anything. So, maybe somebody out there has a
creative, effective way to get a big time, $$$ message through to
the likes of IAMS, Hill's, Eukanuba, Royal Canin
and all the others.

Those big-brand, recommended-by-vets-the-livelong-day, huge
companies are all owned by Procter & Gamble,
Nestle Purina, Del Monte, Master Foods (owns Mars, Inc) and
Colgate-Palmolive.
Also, over the last couple of days even more pet food has been
recalled. This time it's because of cyanuric acid
being found. Those of you with pools and spas might actually have
some lying around since it's used for...CHLORINATION.
*******************************************************************
Here's a tidbit I found at Consumer's Report when I was reading
about how to have a nice-looking lawn. If crab
grass is your problem...hey, just go out and spread some corn
gluten around. A useless filler in pet foods at least
has one excellent household use.
*******************************************************************
There is a fantastic report put together this month by the Animal
Protection Institute at: http://www.api4animals.org
entitled,
"What's Really in Pet Food." It's a long report because it's filled
with all kinds of important information that every
pet owner needs to know. Print it off. Make sure your friends read
it. I promise, you'll be both amazed and shocked.
*******************************************************************
An excellent resource from Lynda, a Pet Sentinel subscriber:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/FelineIBD/ (we cat owners thank
you).

Also, she says to check out http://www.howl911 on the right side where the
experts are and read what Dr. Elizabeth
Hodgkins has to say. I listened to Dr. Hodgkins during the Senate
hearing on April 12 and to me, she was the only
straight shooter telling it like it really is. She's a vet and
former employee of a large pet food company.
*******************************************************************
By the way, the contaminated feed those California hogs ate?

"The contaminated feed was bought April 3 and 13 as salvage pet
food from Diamond Pet Foods Inc., which
received contaminated rice protein concentrate used in some
recalled Natural Balance pet food, Lungren said.
Diamond Pet Foods made the dog and cat foods recalled this week by
Natural Balance after melamine was found
in an ingredient, rice protein concentrate."--Pittsburgh
Tribune-Review online

The famous Diamond Pet Foods, yet again. Last year, their Gaston,
South Carolina plant sent out pet food carrying
aflatoxin* that Cornell University Vets say killed at least 100
dogs in a matter of days. Diamond skated right by
media attention on that one because it happened during the
Christmas/New Year holidays. Menu and Diamond
continue to play prominent roles in the recall.

*af·la·tox·in
- any of various related mycotoxins produced by a species of
Aspergillus, commonly A. flavus, found as a
contaminant in moldy grains and meals, as in rice and peanut meal,
and suspected of causing liver cancer in
humans and other animals.

That article is incorrect in one respect...the Diamond recall and killing of dogs didnt slip by due to Christmas or the holidays at all. It slipped by because Diamond is primarily used by sport dog owners, hunters if you will, and no one cared when HUNTING DOGS WERE DYING. But now, when those stupid labradoodle and puggles are getting killed, why theres got to be an outcry, somethings got to be done about it. Give me a break!. No one cared very much until liberals started losing their lapdogs. Thats why this pet food recall is getting so much attention.

Dog Diamond Pet Food Natural Balance (RICE) Venison and Brown Rice Canned All Can All All
Dog Diamond Pet Food Natural Balance (RICE) Venison and Brown Rice Bagged All Bag All All
Dog Diamond Pet Food Natural Balance (RICE) Venison and Brown Rice Dog Treats All All All All

List above taken from the FDA website concerning Diamond

Quote below taken from the Diamond Website.
ATTENTION: Diamond Pet Food brands dry and canned food and treats ARE NOT ipart of any pet food or treat recall.
Diamond lied to me two years ago when my dogs were starving to death on their food. A simple change of brands to a similar ingredient, protien and fat content fixed the problem withen a week. Last year Diamond killed several dogs. WHY WOULD I BELIEVE THEM NOW???

Folks, I told you about Diamond never touching my dogs lips again AND I told you that this very pet food ingredient incident could wind up in the HUMAN food chain. I hate to tell folks "I TOLD YOU SO" but " I TOLD YOU SO." I've been a USDA meat and poultry slaughter inspector for over 26 years and I know how the BIG Industry conglomerates control the Washington bureaucrats. These people will not blink an eye to spin the revolver's cylinder with one bullit in it on you or your childrens life so what makes you think they give a darn about your dogs? I will venture to say that there is alot of these chemicals being added to foreign imported products to make it appear better than it is as these foreign countries can NOT produce products as we can in the good ole US of A and so they have to cheat to compete. Why in the world would the manufacturers in the USA purchase ingredients from China, I'll tell you...so they can produce it cheaper. When my dogs started to look like they were starving to death on Diamond and I saw it piled up on the shelf at Tractor Supply I knew then that they had to put cheaper ingredients in it to be able to sell it along side of the 26/ 18 Dura Life that Tractor Supply carries for $9.49 @ 50 # bag. Yes, I bought the Diamond there and nearly starved my dogs to death on it.

Feed Canidae or Nature's Variety and then you don't have to worry about it.

That's probably what people were saying last week about Royal Canin.

I doubt that Canidae or Nature's Variety have to worry about this since neither uses glutens in their feeds. It's the only thing they have found so far that is causing this problem. The glutens come from wheat and rice that was imported from China. Perhaps we could all contact George W and see if he could bomb or invade China. Take over that country and show them how to farm.

You know, I remember that whole Diamond mess, that it actually began close to a full year before the aflatoxin recall. Lots of guys on the boards were complaining that their hounds were loosing condition in a serious way, and I can recall a bluetick bitch I used to run my hounds with was on that food and her coat was dry as the Sahara desert. It hadn't been previously - her owner bought a new bag of food and the weight came off, coat dried out. I know Diamond was being flooded w/ phone calls & e-mails from angry working dog owners and they were being told there had been no formula changes, etc. They were all brushed off. Diamond didn't give a rat's behind what the food was doing to the dogs until they were eventually forced to recall the garbage they were peddling.
I think there's been problems with many dog foods for some time now and I doubt we'll ever learn even half the truth. Now that corn gluten meal is under suspicion, I have a strong suspicion my 3yr old German Shepherd bitch's decline in health and eventual kidney failure this fall could have been due to a problem with the food.
Dog food is all about the bottom line. Profit for the manufacturers. They don't care about our dogs, only $$$. As for me, I'll never feed it again. I don't trust any of the dog food companies & this whole recall situation has become a 3 ring circus.

Oh, geez, is that what that poop sells for? :yuck: The first time I heard of Dura Life was when I bought a 3 yr. old bitch linebred on Thorn Gap. The breeder was not what she represented herself to be & was no more than a puppy mill. Stoopidly, I bought the bitch anyway, and could not wash the horrible smell off her. She reeked so badly that one night when I had her in the yard, I opened the window to check on her and got a nose full of her stench!!! This was middle of winter, too. The sample of food the breeder sent with her smelled through the ziploc. I tossed it and after about 2 weeks of good food & without any more bathing, the stench was gone. Honestly, I have never had a dog smell so badly. It was so strong it was literally sickening to be around her :puke: Only the Lord knows what must be in that $9 bag of food, and I bet he's cringing, too. Don't see how anything with a scrap of nutritional value can come out of such a cheap bag of food. Not after you take into consideration the cost of ingredeints, manufacturing, profit. Crap in a sack :puke: :puke: :puke:

recall

Post by tiffinis »

Hey Stacey. Royal Canin only recalled 6 of their products. I was contacted by the company to inform me that what I feed was not involved in the recall. Now that is what I call customer service!!

Tiffinis, I'll bet their customer service is quite good right now. They stand to lose many customers and lots of $$$.

recall

Post by tiffinis »

The whole thing is just insane. With the wheat gluten effecting a total of 5565 products recalled. Now add the rice protein recall and only 11 more products were added. (3 of those on the FDA's list are Diamond products, BTW)
Royal Canin's few products that the company recalled are not on the FDA's list. I just hope this wakes up the companies and the pet owners. Down side is, I am sure the cost of food is only going to go up from here.
