dog feeders

i am looking for the type of dog feeders that youo fill up around 25lbs i guess and the dogs can get it when they want? the ones i seen was plastic in others pen where can i find them ? any one no please help?

Try Tractor Supply Store (TSC) I know they have them - or any farm store.

I would not recommend buying the plastic feeder. I had a metal one then bought a plastic feeder. I hated the plastic feeder, the door on the metal feeder has magnetic strip that helps keep door from blowing open from the wind and keeps rain out. Plastic feeder doesn't have this and rain was always blowing in on the feed. Plastic feeder also was tight so when water got into it the feeder it didn't drain. Metal feeder is made so water drains out. Finally got disgusted and thru the plastic feeder away. I now have 3 metal ones, they are much better and are the same price.

I didn't like the self-feeders period, but I did try them - that's why I knew where to get them. Some dogs will do fine on them and others will glut. We also had too many fights over the feeder. As long as there was food was in it, somebody would stay territorial over it. The puppies and young hounds made it their personal mission to tear them down and play with them, too.

Others use them with no apparent problems - they just didn't work for us.

Wal-Mart has the plastic & Southern States has the metal. I have the plastic and it works very well for me.

Have metal feeders. Would not try plastic because as soon as I do, the dogs will destroy them. Fill them when I go on vacation & during the winter months only. In winter, dogs can eat more & have more calories to produce heat. When I put new dogs together, I make them learn to share the food. I do not allow any fighting in my kennel. If I have a fight, then I let them know who's the boss & none of them have been able to beat me yet. During other seasons except winter, I measure daily portions & place them in the feeders. This ensures that dogs don't get fat. This way the feeders function as bowls. The dogs learn that there is only food for a day & they adjust fine.

GO WIHT THE METAL LAST MUCH LONGER ALL AROUND A BETTER FEEDER.

You can get feeders at your feed store or local co-op.If they don't have them in stock most will be glad to order them for you.The metal feeders are alot better and will last longer.

hey becarful with selffeeders a lot of times you can only tell if the dog is sick if it doesnt eat - just a tip

How about sectionalized feed troughs similar to ones used for cows only smaller, has anyone seen or used something like this? I personally don't like the self feeders for all the same reasons mentioned in previous posts but I have been thinking about trying to come up with some sort of sectionalized trough instead of using bowls,pans ,etc.

I have used a self feeder up to the time I aquired my second beagel. My first dog was raised with a self feeder in her kennel. When the second female was added, she ate like there was no tomorrow! Then she would fight and growl toward the first female. I tried to let them adjust (three months)to the feeders but they never did. Now I removed the self feeder and put their feed on the clean part of the kennel floor. I tried two bowls but they would go back and forth to each others bowls and try to out eat each other. My feelings are some dogs just don't adjust to self feeders unless raised from a puppy with them. Oh, yes the plastic ones are junk!

I have nothing against people who use self feeders correctly, but I have seen pups that were worthless because they were never socialized by lazy owners who never came around except to fill the feeder. I guess thats always in the back of my mind everytime I think about buying one. I figure I can atleast spend 15 to 20 minutes a day feeding

There are pro& cons to self feeders. I raise my beagles off the ground and found with self feeders food is not wasted by stepping in feed bowl and going threw the wire. i got the 5lbs feeder that are metal how ever I never fill them full. I make it a point to check them daily, this way to change water each day. I bought mine from our local co-op the did not know they could get one that small. I had the check the people who makes them and they were able to order 5# metal ones. I think any larger and you may waste feed;rats, coons,oppum.,water etc.
PS these feeders cost about $17 each.
