I need to go to the ivermectin approach, thanks for the link.
I'm told the dog must first be tested for heartworm before the Ivermectin can be adminstered though?

If the dog is infected already, the ivermectin will kill the worm and it will detach from the heart. It would most certainly kill the dog.
I was told by one gentleman that you would know in an hour or two after giving it ivermectin if it had heartworms because it would be dead.

Dogs with heartworms are treated with a poison that for some reason kills the worms but they stay attached to the heart and dissolve over time.
A dog being treated for heartworm has to be inactive for a long time before it is safe for activity. Activity could knock a big piece of worm free with bad results..
