kennel construction?

Post by Hunter »

:?: Hey guys,
I am debating about going to an above ground kennel. What is the best wire flooring to use as to not cause splaying? Thanks , Paul

I have several beagles that have kenneled above ground without the feet splaying. I think a lot of that is in the genes. If you are concerned about it though, I'd put a porch just outside the box and another at the door end of the kennel, and just put the wire flooring inbetween them. They spend most of their time lounging at the gate end of the kennel anyway. For flooring, I like the vinyl-coated wire 1"x1". Hope this helps.

ABOVE GROUND KENNELS

I use 2x4 welded wire for the floor. my kennels are 3' wide and 6 feet long in the run and I have a 12" wide board the width of the kennel in front of the box with a 6" wide board running down the center of the kennel full length. I have never had any problems with their feet, in fact I believe that it toughens them up because since I have put my dogs on wire I have yet to bring a dog home with cut feet while running on frozen snow or ice. Maybe it's just coincidental.

above ground kennels

you could also try using wood slats...run them the length of the kennel floor....keep them in a straight line..this makes clean up a little bit easier...spray with hose and waste will run the length of the slats to the back of the kennel run....leave an opening the width of the kennel and make the opening approx.2 inches deep to allow for the waste to drop down...good luck..

flooring for kennels

Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in on this topic I just got done building my second kennel. On the first one and the second one I used a plastic grid flooring, it has 1"x1" squares and comes in 4 foot x 2 foot I'm pretty sure that's the right dimension any way if thats to small they're made to fit together. Only modification I did was took a saw and made the holes bigger. I only have a small section of the run with this flooring the rest with plywood the dogs learn real quick to do there business on the grids. I bought this at Fleet Farm if you don't have a fleet farm you should be able to find at a store that sells farming equiptment.

i used deck boards on my above ground pens and just spaced them about 3/4 of an inch. Clean up is a breaze and i don't have to wory about their feet splaying.
