I agree with those who have said poor breeding. They have to have the right stuff bred in them.

Preacher,
I think a big thing that has hurt dogs is people talking a big line of bull without spending enough time hunting the dogs to really know what they are breeding. I call them Living room hunters, most of thier best hunts are talked about in the living room instead of actually spending time in the briars.

Breeding a bad bitch to a FC that you know nothing about, expecting a brag dog, has done more to harm the breed/ruined more dogs.

Good point gus. Too many people breeding to field trial dogs and not hunting dogs. Many field champions are gun shy, can't jump their own rabbit and/or are too rough. Nothing against field champions but they better be able to hunt, jump, circle and do it solo or they are no field champion in my book. Titles don't bring rabbits to the gun. ;)

Well if you can name it it can happen. All the things you mentioned and not running the dogs enough it hard for them to learn setting in the pen.

I THINK ONE OF THE WORST THINGS YOU CAN DO TO A YOUNG HOUND OR A ADULT HOUND FOR THAT MADDER IS TO RUN IT WITH PATCH HOUNDS.................... :D

SORRY PREACHER YOU JUST MADE IT SO EASY!!!!!!!!!!!

I think a person should trial the format that best suits what they like in a dog. I know that most formats are there to show you the cream of the crop. IMO for breeding purposes. How else can you breed the best line in your oppinion into your own kennel. Don't get me wrong there ahould be more info gathered than just the title hung on a hound.

Gotta start somewhere :D

Letting them sit in a kennel with no human contact until they are 6 months old.

I have seen more well bred dogs ruined because lack of socialization.
I have seen first hand on numerous occasions.

Take two pups out of the same litter.
One guy handles the pups daily, works with it in the yard, and socializes the pup between the critical 10 and 16 week period.

The other guy leaves the pup in the kennel. Feeds it, gives it medicine, and occasionally pulls it out to show someone. These dogs often end up shy, and with problems related to lack of socialization.

The well socialized dog develops normally, the other misses out on key points in its life. It would be like keeping a child in a crib until it was 6. Yeah, it will eventually learn to walk, talk, etc - but will have social problems the rest of its life because it missed the point in its life where it normally would have learned those things.

I have to agree with Gus. So many so called beaglers set in the living room and look at a pedigree and title and think; Man if I can get that pedigree and title into my bloodline then they would have to be great dogs. I know of FC. 15" males I wouldn't bring home the things home and have to feed them.
Then they compliment this intelligence with packing young pups under a year old with 4,5,6 year old dogs on a regular basis. I've known guys who had a tremendous young hound and as soon as it starts showing potential and dominance they would want to go out and "show him to all the boys". One such case the guy knew where a lot of people ran every Saturday morning and he went down there and turned this young hound loose, well by the time "all the boys" got there the total number of hounds was 15. All the while all the owner could comment on was how good it sounded to have all those dogs running and barking at the same time. I just wonder what his young male was thinking about it?
