IS IT EVER TO EARLY TO START PUPS

Post by Andy and Gretchen Smith »

WE HAVE THREE PUPS WHELPED 4-29-03 AND FOR THE LAST THREE DAYS I HAVE TAKEN THEM TO MY RABBITS CAGES AND LET THEM CHASE RABBITS. THE CAGES SIT ABOUT TWO FEET ABOVE GROUND SO IT WAY ABOVE THEIR HEADS BUT THEY DO STAND ON THEIR BACK LEGS TO SMELL AND GET AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE. THEY START BARKING AND RUNNING AROUND IN CIRCLES. DO YOU FEEL THIS IS HELPFUL OR HARMFUL TO THEIR DEVELOPMENT OR SHOULD I DO THIS ONLY A FEW TIMES THEN TAKE THEM OUT INTO MY THICKETT AND TURN THEM LOOSE. BY THE WAY DID I MENTION I GET PUPPY BIT WHEN CATCHING THEM UP IN THIS SITUATION.

Not really.I caught two rabits and put them on a string and let the pups I mentioned in the puppy update post sight chase them.I did this twice only.I wanted to get their nose full of rabbit.

After that it is walks in the woods. If I see a rabbit in the yard next to the woods I run it off. Then go get the pups and walk them over that way. They scent run it which is what you want.IMHO you can over do the sight run thing quickly when trying to start a pup.You want that nose working. It is a hoot to see 2 1/2 month old pups running a wild track.Bottom line the more time spent with your pups the better they are.
