Castration Bands for Tails

Cool,
I have a friend that has one that heals up during the off season. It's not beat to the bone like my "Trot" was, but it's completely raw. Are you noticing a difference in the dogs demeanor, or his drive? If it gets bad enough you will. One thing you may want to consider is this... Now that I took 3 inches off Trot's tail because of the crook, his tail bleeds less than any other dog in the pack. Don't feel like you are hurting the dog by doing this, they are in less pain after it's done, and it doesn't hurt them that bad. All in all though, I still like the looks of a full tail better, but not at the expense of a lot of pain to the dog.

I hear ya, I've done it before, but would rather not do it just b/c of the look factor. It was def. affecting his hunt/drive, he was in pain, had to put him up. Last dog I did it to was about 3 years ago and was semi-early in the season. I did it so I could continue hunting him. Now that the season is over, I'm wondering if it will heal up since we won't be running as much.

I believe it will. I also have noticed that when it's colder out their tails bleed more and sooner in the day's hunt. So cold weather plays a role in it. If you back off the running a bit it will heal up and the hair should grow back. It may take a little while.

I had a female last season her tail was raw about 2 inch at the end of the season. I didn't run her much after the season was out. By early spring it was all healed up and the hair grew back. But every dog is different...............

I think the healing depends on how bad the tail is really beat up.

My vet told me with the way my dogs tail is that it will never heal unless i kept it wraped all the time.

I'm supposed to get my Amoxi,, monday FedEx tried to deliver but they couldn't go down my drive way or sumthing.

Here's a pic of his tail now, after "healing" for 2 days. It's def. not down to the bone, but after 15 min. in the field, it's a bloody mess. I think I'll give it a month or so to heal up and see how it does, then make my decision. What do you all put on the tails when out in the field, duck tape comes off w/in minutes.

I use Blue Kote which you can get at TSC, or any farm/feed store that sells horse stuff. Then i put vet rap around that, then duck tape over it to hold it on and put the duct tape on about 3" below the raw section also just to hold it on. Make sure you double wrap with the duck tape so it will stay on longer. Thats what i did and it usally last from 3-4hrs depending on how thick the cover is.

Does anyone have a pic of a hound with the castration band on? I have docked puppies tails with rubber bands but I have no expierience with the castration bands.. I currently have a female that has a low blood count due to her tail bleeding in extreme amounts in this cold weather.
