When I was in MO, my vet made a mix of ivomec that I shot down the mouth and they swallowed it. Now that I am in Mich, they are money grubbing gotta squeze every penny you can from all the yuppies around here vets. I am going to visit TSC or find a local feed store.

Emery, your right about money grubbin vets here in MI.They will sell you 12 mo. of heartworm med. and wont sell you more without paying for another test. Won't take your word that the dog got all 12 on time? When I first moved near Greenville from NE Grand Rapids I made the mistake of telling the new vet how much cheaper they were than G.R. vets and guess what? TSC does carry 1% ivomec, can't remember the cost. I also found EMT gel there last week. Dave

If ya can't find it from TSC Emery then you could order it from Revival.

Emery, you help a lot of people so I am going to give you the facts. Go to most any feed store and buy a tube of 1.87% equine Ivermectin paste. Mine is 6.08 grams and it costs $4.99, brand name is Horse Health Products but any brand will do. That will last you 6 months to a year depending on how many dogs you have. It only takes something like 5 micrograms per kilogram of dog weight to kill the dirofilaria. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds and a microgram is one millionth of a gram and you can's even see that much.
Don't worry about measuring. Just put the tiniest dab about the size of a BB shot in a piece of hot dog, ball of dog food, whatever and feed it to your dog once a month. If it makes you feel better, put a little more. Don't say anything to the vet or he will have you believing you are commiting murder.

Larry, I sent my husband to the feed store to get me Ivomec and a couple syringes... he comes home with Panomec (ivermectin) IN a syringe, LOL! It's an oral paste for horses. There's 120mg in the tube paste with 1.87% ivermectin. So is it any good to use on the hounds ? Would that be the same as you are talking about previoiusly regardless of the brand ? Can you give too much ?
Thanks, Jane
Thanks, Jane
Jane, you sure about the 120 mg? I have never seen a tube smaller than 6 grams which is 6,000 mg. Any of the 1.87% paste for horses is all the same and will work. It won't hurt to put a bigger dab in but is not needed. I use canned dog food rolled into a small ball, then hide the paste in the center of it. The dog may not eat it if you just put it on the outside.
Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes and if you don't have them where you live, you don't need to worry about your dogs getting heartworm. I know a big breeder in southern Va. who does not use preventive because he says they have no mosquitoes. It is so quick and easy that I would not risk losing a dog to heartworm no matter where I lived, but I only have about a dozen dogs and he has about a hundred.

Yep, it says each syringe delivers 120 mg of ivermectin ?? But net contents says 6.24 grams. You would be correct Larry. And once a month, you wouldn't have to worm them for anything else if you give them this ?
I just gave them Mulitgard from the Pets mega store, expensive! cost me $48 for 6 pills and I should have shopped around, the canine all wormer from another online store was $53.90 for 40 tabs ! Aughhh, oh well, live and learn I suppose. But it would take care of the tapes.
Yes we have those darn mosquitoes, and black flies. Carry you away! Makes life miserable sometimes in the woods, I think that one of the pluses to winter is NO BUGS ! That and it's hunting season !!

Yes, the total contents of the syringe would provide about 120 mg of the active ingredient which is ivermectin.
6.24g. x 1.87% = about 0.117g or roughly 120 mg.
All this will do is prevent heartworm. Roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, tapeworm etc won't be affected by this small dosage. You can give more, but I prefer to worm for those with Safeguard paste or liquid. If you have tapes, many vets say the only effective drug for all kinds of tapes is praziquantel. One trade name is Droncit but there are many products on the market that have this active ingredient.

That was in the Multigard I bought and I already adminstered a couple of days ago. I think that next time I will buy the canine allwormer and that should pretty much take care of that department. Save the guess work too. They got Strongid not too awfully long ago and that is what the vet suggests here in my area, we may not be prone to the whip worm? I don't know. But then again this is for the run of the mill house dog too, not for a hound that's out in the bush so to speak. We usually give the liver/heart to the hounds when cleaning hare, hate to waste and it's a treat to them. It's alot to remember but I guess once you get on a schedule it becomes like old hat. Does the ivomec orally do the same as the paste would for heartworm?
Paste, liquid, oral, injected, makes no difference as long as you get a little ivermectin in the dog. All it does is kill the larval stage of the heartworm in the bloodstream.
I don't know what kind of worms are a problem where you live. Hook, round and tape are about everywhere I think, and whips may not be quite as common. Why worry about what your dog has, just be proactive as Don Potts suggests on his site and keep them all out of your dog. Click on this:
