Most important, make sure she knows you and the hounds are a "package deal" she's getting. I have had to remind my wife that she knew well before, what she was getting and it does save grief on you.
Learn to bend like a willow, because if you don't, she may use it on you.
The "walk away" to the barn, is a good idea. The cool down and thought given to the topic at hand always brings more reason and understanding back to the table, I've found. My wife hates it, but she now understands it's better than saying something you may regret, but also don't forget, making-up is half the fun of being married.
