I thought that was the idea of a trial (to promote a gun dog). If mine can't be hunted, they won't be trialed. If mine can't be trialed then they won't be fed by me for very long. I do both and the dog has to be able to do both. I don't have the time nor the resources to keep dogs that can't be gun hunted and trialed. I like a fast dog that can hold the line pretty close. I live for those days when the scenting is head high and the dogs hardly lose the track. I know i sacrifice a little line control and steady running on the bad scenting days, but I can live with it as long as they can keep the rabbit moving. I'm not talking about sacrificing nose, I'm talking about dogs that want to catch the rabbit and run like it at all times. They need to gear down a little when the scenting is tough, but I don't want them to gear down too much. It's just not as exciting. I just realized that I described the perfect dog. Anybody got one? I don't.
Gun Dog Definitions vary what one considers a gun dog another might not. My definition of a gundog is one that allows me to account for game. Speed doesn't have anything to do with it. That is why there are so many different trial formats as stated before there is a format for every kind of dog out there(including formats that require gun testing ex. AKC SPO and ARHA PP). Is one better than the other? No because they suit the person who trials in that format.
Don't fool yourself into thinking that just because they are trialed that they can't bring a rabbit to the gun.
