jump shooting

I have witnessed what Pete Young is talking about the light coming on when shooting a rabbit that the dogs just jumped. In my earlier days of rabbit hunting in the easten mountains of WV if you didn't shoot on the jump you usually didn't get any rabbits. As I have gotten older the desire to fill the game bag has diminished somewhat but I still will take a rabbit after it has been circled. I have always had dogs that can run them for hours if the rabbit will cooperate and I love to here them running. If someone wants to shoot on the jump I will not comdem the practice but for me there is plenty of shooting these days after the rabbit has been circled.

I am with you swamper. I know guys that do jump shoot and if that is what they like thats fine. Our group is usually small and we only shoot after a loop. Sometimes it is a quick loop but lately the rabbits have been running big. If anybody new hunts with us my buddy gives the speech. It goes something like this. We feed our dogs every day because we like to hear them run rabbits. If you jump a rabbit call the dogs or tell us and we will put the dogs on the rabbit. No rabbit is worth risking shooting a dog or fellow hunter. If you shoot a rabbit on the jump or squeeze out on a hard check we will pick up the dogs and go home.
I guess I am hooked on the dog running and I feel the rush more hearing the race. Saturday a rabbit kept going through some open woods and the dogs pounded. I was sad to hear the gun go off on the second loop. It might not have lasted much longer any way the rabbit was stiff shortly after the shot. I saw the rabbit in the briars before the dogs got there. If I would have shot him in the bed I would have missed some of the best running of the year.

I`m with Big dog and Swamper. When someone hunts with me and my dogs I tell them up front "no jumpshooting!!". Running the rabbit back to the gun for a shot is the dogs job, thats why I feed and take care of them. I have guys that I dont allow to hunt with me any more because they chose to break that rule. Everyone can hunt the way they choose, but when its with me and my hounds, It`s by my rules. Rabbits are to be shot with heat behind them in my hunting parties.

i run year round and don't kill rabbits till december. dec. till feb. 28. i let the guys who hunt with me shoot when-ever they like (unless i have young dog and don't want their ears rang). shooting a rabbit that the dogs jump is nothing like shooting a dove off the wires and lighting ducks and shooting them is legal. if i want a mess of rabbits (3-4), i'll even shoot one setting. who's better, the guy who kills 3-4 to eat by jump shooting, or the guy who kills a limit every time out that the dogs have circled.
One reason I am open to jump shooting.
1. If there is a young one hunting with us and he gets a chance to bag a rabbit. I don't care as long as it is a safe shot.
2. I have friends and relatives that can only hunt one or two days a year.
Some days we have trouble finding a rabbit that will circle. I don't care if they shoot before the first loop. The day after christmas we jumped 5 rabbits and only had two circle. A couple guys shot and missed before the rabbits circled the first time.
Usually if there is a young hunter, I will stay with them and advise them on shots. Last year we had a 13 year old hunted with us. We jumped several rabbits, every one was holding off on shots to let this young man get a shot. He was never in the right spot, or didn't see the rabbit until it was too late. We finally had a perfect set up. The dogs were over the hill and jumped one. They were bringing it up the hill. The rabbit came under a fence and ran straight away down a mowed path. I had told the young man to get ready. When the rabbit came up and ran straight away I said, "there you go, take the shot."
It seemed like it took forever and the rabbit was abotu out of range of his 410 single shot when he rolled it. He was a very happy young man.
No one cared that it hadn't circled.
Most of the time we are hunting I here stuff like, "Right here is the rabbit" or "It just ran by me and headed to you".
I always say, "shoot it". Most guys I hunt with are like, "No let the dogs run it", "It was too close", or "It was sitting".
We have all have passed on easy shots hoping to get a tough shot on a dead run to make it fun. Nothing makes us smile more than to hear,"[bang] [bang] [bang] CRAP! It is coming your way".

to each is own but i don't allow jump shots over my hounds, i make it a rule to any and everyone who hunts with me, none of the above.
i also use the 1 circle rule with don't chamber a round until a rabbit is up to prevent jump shots.
this really works good with folks you haven't ever hunted with, if the gun not loaded how can you jump shoot????????????

Silverzuk, that was a jump shot that you described. Nothing unsafe about that one.
That is the main reason I don't allow it. I've told folks, if a dog gets shot, the minimum is $1000 and it goes up depending on the dog. None are actually worth that much I'm sure but never the less, that is what they will owe me.
I have nothing against jump shooting as it is actually fun (I remember doing it as a kid) but just not with my dogs.

And let them run the rabbit at least one circle if not two or three or four!!!!
I am not a subscriber of jump shooting. If your dog(s) can't get it done get new dog(s) until your pack is able.
But, do as you please - if that's how you roll so be it.

This year we've had a couple newbies go out with us. We ALWAYS have a "come to jesus" meeting prior to hitting the field.
1. Dont shoot near the dogs, if you shoot one, you've bought him, at my price. (happened to a guy I know this year)
2. Dont jump shoot the rabbit. If the dogs are running him, fire away. (typically thats on the circle back)
I've seen dogs almost ruined from 1 shot at the wrong time. Why own dogs if your gonna jump on a bush and blast away? Too much time and money invested to do that, if you ask me.

ps... and we've got plenty of rabbits to hunt, and its private land. We've probably killed 40 off our land this year, and you can still go jump a rabbit within 5 minutes.
Jump shoot yours, but not ours! I've seen a lot of people complaining about rabbit populations on here. I hope none of you complaining are saying you jump shoot... Hard to train when you jump shoot.
