What defines brains in a beagle?

I dont agree with your "rabbit in the hole" scenario. Using that logic a hound treeing a coon till it is shot out is a dumb dog. That doesnt make much sense does it? Just because a hound exibits behaviour you approve of or disapprove of, isn't necessarily an indication of intelligence, or lack of. I think you're much closer by using the example of the dumb hound having to make 100 trips to the woods to figure various problems encountered as opposed to the smart hound that does it the first time. We all hope they learn more or get better with experience. Thats why the best hounds, even if they only possess average intelligence are out in the woods all the time getting the experience they need. Tough to show how good you are if you're sitting in the kennel.

Mybeagles quote; "I dont think you and Patch are saying the same thing....he think extra mouth is due to lack of brains to use a big nose./

Yup,   , you got me right...A hound poping off on old scent before the rabbit is up, a hound poping off in the check, when he don't have the line to move...yup, a excitable nonlevelheaded hound.
By defination, your wording "extra mouth" means speaking out of place or nonproductive... ;)
I've seen hounds like this that were doing nothing more than dogtracking, that's why none of the other hounds would speak on the line when they checked in on them... :lol
I'm not sure you understand as much of what I say, as you think... ;)

He has been shocked, sprayed, given large kennel area, given bones etc...Had to move him to my dads out in the country, but he is getting fed up as well. Good dog, has all the tools, but wants constant attention. By my definitions is a very smart dog, but Im starting to question that based on the kennel barking.

Dog has awsome mouth, but my neighbors Im sure were not so impressed. Never had a problem with beagles barking....mine dont even bark when dogs and cats are being walked around the block, to me thats smart. My neighbors dog barks at every person, dog, cat, bird, mailman, etc that passes by, that dogs a fool in my book.
Mybeagles, I do petty your neighbors, beacuse there is no stronger bark than a Coon Dog, did you ever try a bark collar, it might work then if it does work, then get a dummy collar. its nothing but a fake bark collar. Good luck with that Coon Dog.

I used to think popping off was lack of brain power, but have started to rethink that.... Just because one dog can smell the rabbit and the others can't does that make him less smart or more smart??? The aren't barking at nothing, they are obviously getting scent, and to me these dogs have more nose than other dogs. The problem is when you get a dog that cold trails and does not produce the rabbit, that is the most frustrating thing there is.... But I know of a female that will cold trail a hare on old feeders tracks, hit every once in a while but I bet she gets 85% of the jumps also... To me a dog that can do that and do it correct is priceless... I'm not sure popping off on old scent is less brains. But a dog that constantly babbles would make you think that don't have a brain...
hounds... hare.... hunter.... bang... what gets better than that.
