Rufus,

As anyone that has been in the game for a while knows, not all pups turn out. It's like shooting craps. Even when linebreeding there a few that don't make it. I wish a lot of novice beaglers would understand that when you buy a pup, the only thing guaranteed is good health.

Was Moody Blues the big brother I saw in the starting pen? I remember seeing him when I was there. He tore into those brush piles like a maniac. Nice mouth too.

I had Skittles here and ran her for a month or so. She was nice, Ethel was another story. If Skittles had been a larger dog she would still be here but she was being pulled. Tough bitch though. I gave her to a kid that needed a dog with potential. She is his brag dog now. So all worked out for her. When I last spoke to him he said he was using a collar on Ethel trying to teach her not to fight.

Oh yeah, Comanche and Freebird are doing well in NC. They're having tons of rabbits killed in front of them.

Comanche and Freebird are both doing well. They have plenty of grit and are getting some tracks to run. They both seem to be tough as nails and their ears and noses are torn up worse than the rest of the dogs at the end of the day. Both are 2.5 years old are coming in to their own now. Freebird was a little ahead for a while but Comanche is coming on. They can both fly. On the best scenting days they can drive one pretty hard. I own Freebird and ran her braced up alot last spring and summer. It was nothing for her to be on the track nose down leaving her mate behind 20 to 30 yards even though she is only a little over 13". My buddy owns Comanche and he has had three very good showings the last times out.

If you keep line breeding the Chico line don't be surprised to see those "moody" hounds. Chico himself didn't like other dogs.

Who is the Chico dog??

FC Chico's Northway Venture. Chico was Paul's first FC and the beginning of the line that all of you line breed so much. Chico from what I understand is talent in the line, he was much better then his son Spur.

I see the Chico dog in some of my pedigrees. A few generations back but the line breeding percentage is pretty high. Who saw him run ?

I never saw him run, but my father handled him and our good friend had him at stud for quite a while.

This is what Paul said about him in the June 1981 Large Pack Magazine:

Chico is one of the toughest 15" males to come this way in quite a few years! He has superb hunt, desire, and a lasting determination that just won't quit. He has the bloodlines; as his two grandsires are and have been at the top of the US hare sires for years.

Does that sound familiar of the "Northway" line?

KANE
SORRY I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE NAME"" CHICO""AS I MOSTLY REFER TO HIM AS THE SIRE OF"' SPUR""THANKS FOR THE INPUT I SURE WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE HIM RUN. MOST OF MY HOUNDS HAVE ABOUT -3- CROSS'S OF HIM.THAT LINE SEEMS TO CROSS GOOD WITH BIRCHLAKE STUFF. I'M CROSSING IT WITH SOME FC.DOM'S DOUGIE THAT I HAVE NOW.OLD POSTMAN HAS -6- CROSSES OF DOUGIE IN -5-GEN AND IN THE RIGHT PLACES.

to those of you interested...it is now FC Kane's Irish Sport'n Wood. If you like the Northway line, bring a good bitch to Sport...he's throwing some nice looking pups.

Steve,
Woodrow is still kicking. He'll be 12 at the end of the month and had his last litter almost 3 years ago. He never was an aggressive stud hound, however the three I got out of him I can see a little bit in all three...especially the bitch. However she doesn't have the foot that they are looking for at trials. I'm getting her ready for a few gundog brace trials coming up...Susquehanna and New Scotland. I ran her tonight with Fld. Wnr. Kane's Irish Beach Bum II for 3 1/2 hours on one hare.

Joe,
thanks again for the kind words. I have thought about moving Hoover somewhere else here and there, but the fact is, I love the hound. And on the right day he'll do it. Art Beamer told me this...that those Itchy Bawls dogs don't start doing it until they're five. He banged out two seconds this year and has made 2nd series in most every trial.

I'll be getting my first "Sport'n Wood" pup in a couple weeks. Out of FC Hemlock Miss Jenny Jones. Jenny went on a tear here in the PVA back in '04 winning Paskamansett, Easthampton, and Holyoke in three straight weekends. Jenny is out of the best hound I've ever seen, FC Carreau's Seaside Jenny, and Sport is out of the best male I've ever seen FC Great Bear Woody. On paper (triple mated pups) I should be getting a good one, only time will tell.
