Post by bill (flint river ) »

i have a 5 month old femal patch that i started collar training. well the other night i had all the pups in the basement and notice some thing was up with her. well her neck was all tore up on the bottom side from the collar and maybe her scratching it. any why it smells awlfull. first night i cleaned it and put bagbalm on it. the second night i did the same , tonight i cleaned it with proxide. have any of u ever notice a smell from a surfuce wound?? she is full of energy and eating, playing hard. just concern with the smell.

Sounds like she has a serious infection going on, I would get her on some antibiotics. Colars can burn a dog and the wound can be deep. I would shave around the wound and clean it with betadine scrub, if you use peroxide it will kill the good flesh as well as the bacteria, but make the wound worse.

You will need to keep the wound clean and dry. I would say that you need to clean it at the minimum of twice a day with the betadine solution then apply some triple antibiotic cream and get some oral antibiotics for your dog.

How long did you have the collar on her? You can get pressure sores from leaving an e-collar on a dog.

wasnt a shock collar, i was lead training her. i did have it a bit tight, but she is flat wild and it is time to set some rules. i beleave i had it alittle to tight and she may have ben scratching it. it looked alittle better tonight. i wanted to start showing her bunnies, but it will have to wait till her neck heels up. just watching her run through the yard or threw the woods makes me smile. she is flat out fast. shearches fast. time will tell, but i am hoping to base my patch hounds of this femal. i like mixing my pack with patch and branko. seems to be a combo that really works for me.

keflex is a cheap antibiotic ( 10$ for 10 day supply ) from your vet. Clean and irrigate the wound 2x a day.

Cleaning a wound with bleach and water works well also.
