Just getting started looking for some help
Hey everyone im so thankful this board exsists, i got my beagle when he was 9 months old and now he is 14 months and everytime i get him out he still has not ran a rabbit....he seems to want to pee on everything in the woods, he sniffs all over like hes on something but never producess. he came from a family of really good dogs but for some reason the owner wanted to give this dog away......already suspisious in my mind.....i guess what im asking is there a such thing as a bad beagle or one that just wont hunt or is there something i can do
Love is a beautiful thing!
Find yourself a mentor. Talk to him about these deep questions.
The breeder might have just wanted one of his dogs to go to a guy like you. I give away alot more than I sell, and I aint nobody!
Find a startin pen.
Buy a puppy trainer.
Get a set of E- collars.
Put them on the ground alot.
Lets talk again in a couple of years.
With love, Robert Hatfield

Hey coyotehunter, you say he saw a pen and did well, or so you were told...my advice for NEXT time is don't leave a training pen until you have seen how the dog runs in it...It would be very beneficial to you to find someone that knows hounds and hunting well to help you train your hound...he is still young enough to turn on...if for some reason you can never get him going to suit you, remember that there are a LOT of hounds out there. Don't waste too much time on your first one....BTW, where do you live????

If you wanna make the drive sometimes, I would be glad to help in any way I can...there are a lot of others on here from Michigan that should be able and willing to help also....I live northeast of Grand Rapids, so it is quite a drive for either of us, but worth it if it helps you out....email me at beaglet@localnet.com or pm me on this site if I can help....Tony

There is a guy from Canton either on this site of on http://www.beagleboard.com You should be able to hook up with him. I am just a couple hours west of you. If you want, we can run sometime too. I know it is a haul, but I seem to drive around an hour every time I go out running with people around here.
Be patient with your hound. It is still young. It gets really frustrating waiting for them to turn the light on, but it will happen eventually. Just keep taking him out where you know there are rabbits.
I used to live in AA and worked for Ameritech and most of my work was in ypsi, but that was 10 years ago.

What does the dog do when it finds a hot track. Are there rabbits where you are taking him? Some areas have very few rabbits and a patch down the road may be loaded with them. Try to get him in a rabbit rich environment. If you have to, drive around early morning and find a rabbit and set him down on a hot track. (best if he doesn't see the rabbit) What does he do?
