Bev brought this dog up so I am going to ask a question that might sound stupid.
I have always heard and on occasion seen a "warfield red" and my uncle used to raise these colored dogs.
Was this dog a warfield red or was he the origin of these colored hounds. Just a question and probably sounds stupid and I imagine that those colors was around way before he was.

Warfield Red was a FC back in the 40's I believe. He wasn't even red in color. He must have been a great producer because his genes still dominate today.
For some reason his name is catchy and dog dealers still promote his legacy to trap the unsuspecting sucker. (My opinion)
Walter Bredemeier(the old man) told me he had went to Indy and bred to Warfield Red one time. Said the hound was a tri color and Bennet said he was named after his kennelman. Now, I don't know if the(kennelman) fellow's last name was Warfield but I'm guessing it probably was and if he was a red headed fellow, they probably called him "Red". So this has always been my understanding of the way it may have been.
It is a catchy name and many have put it to the red color of a hound for years, just as many have put the Patch name to many of the white hounds. Remember, the color of the hide, don't tell what's inside...Patch
Swamper, Brace Trial beagles in the 40's were not the Brace Trial beagles we have seen in the past thirty years. The beagle was the most popular AKC breed in THE 50's. They didn't become so popular by being hobby hounds. They were useful rabbit dogs.

He was try colored. At this years spo nationals they had 2 old hounds and hunting magazines there for everyone to look at that had his picture in it. Those old books were neat to look at. Most of the stud prices ranged from $15 to $25. Im going to ask my grandad if he ever got to see him run. I'm curios about his running style now.
A lot of people that own red beagles will say they have Warfield Reds. Like everyone has said he was a tricolor and probably his impact on red dogs bloodlines today is almost insignificant. I just dont understand why these people have to use this name to sell these red dogs. If these dogs were red and had him in their pedigree you probably couldnt find Warfield Red in their pedigree in at least the 7th or 8th generation. I am like everyone else its become a catchy name among red dogs. C'mon guys just call em red dawgs....lol

Red was out of grays captain who was out of gray's linesman.He was a tri-color.The story that I have heard was that he was named after a neighbor's farmhand.I do not know if that is true or not.It is just a name that caught on.back in the late 60's we had some stuff that went back to those lines.I think that Linesman went back to yellow creek but I might be mistaken on that.
Wingpatch have you had any luck on finding that pic of Warfield red? Every old timer around here says they have a warfield bred beagle just because they have a red/white beagle. Anybody know for sure when he was alive? I heard he died around 1960. I sure would like to have a pic to show some of the old timers around here. Tom Gross
