Interesting dog food rating system

Since there has been a lot of discussion about food I thought this was interesting.



How to grade your dog's food: (Some brands are done at the very bottom]

Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or

fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source,subtract 5
points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five
ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewerâ?Ts rice", "rice flour" are
all
the same grain), subtract 5 points

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats

in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 morepoints

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil,subtract 2
points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic
to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnâ?Tt allergic to

wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnâ?Tt allergic to
beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or
nutritionist, add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than
the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein
source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are
pesticide-free, add 1 point

94-100+ = A

86-93 = B

78-85 = C

70-77 = D

69 = F

There are 3 that I feed (really 2 and one I was thinking about trying) My primary feed is Nutro Natural Hi Energy, Secondary choice is Hi-Standard 26/18 (purple bag??) and I was thinking of trying Purnia One Natural Blends. Could someone rate those 3 ?? I don't have any empty bags here right now.

You still gotta trust the COMPANY thats a putting all this stuff together and call'n it dog food!!!!!!!!!! Thats were Euk comes in!!!!!!!

I didn't do the scores on the other foods. It was already done when I posted the info. If you follow the scoring and read the ingredient labels it should be pretty easy. If you can't find the ingredients from a food you want to score just look for the info online for the food.

As for Iams or Euk.. YUK! I feed twice as much of this food to keep any weight on my dogs and frankly its overpriced! This company is a sell out as well. No thanks!!!

I'm not mad at anything. After 20 years of breeding and showing and living with many dogs I can honestly say I've tried almost all dog foods on the market. A couple of times I tried Euk and Iams just to see how my dogs would do and in each instance I fed twice as much to keep weight on them. The food itself isn't anything exciting ingredientwise as opposed to the other brands I've tried and the price isn't in anyway worth what you get since there are many comparable foods for less $$$.

One of the interesting foods listed is the Kirkland brand Chicken/Rice for about 17.00 for a 50lb bag. That food recieved a high rating and I may try it. You can purchase it at costco.

I believe that Diamond was honest enough to get the word out right away that they had a problem and as far as I know they didn't try to wine and dine HSUS now did they? Afloxin mold grows on corn and since the kirkland brand is CORN free I hardly think its anything to worry about..

Perhaps you should apply for a job as the new IAMS spokesman since you seem to really LOVE their product ;-)

Don't get your shorts in a bundle!! I was just making a food comparison and it was to the entire group not just you. The Iams co is just big business and I'm glad you trust them.. REALLY! I do believe that we can discuss dog food ingredients here though without a fight.

I'll tell ya what... I'm going to the Iams sponsored BIG AKC show in Dec and if I win any Iams/Euk food coupons I'll send em right on to ya!
