I just wish he would bring them dogs down here that have never been broke with a collar. I don't know where he is from but I know it ain't Alabama. He would be running them down all day long and that leads me to another question.
"Are you breeding brace hounds?" I run medium speed dogs and I know I couldn't run one of them down. There has been so much wrote here that I have forgot most but didn't you say that you shook your dogs. I did that once and the dog almost went totally shy. He wasn't running a deer but he did something wrong. I say good luck to ya and I hope they are all deer broke.
By the way, I'm still waiting on someone to take my bet on breeding deer running out of a line of dogs.

AlabamaSwamper, I was told Joe's dogs are slow and timid. I'd like to see him trying to run dogs down in some of the big swamps we have. Are by the time he could try and find a place to cut them off they would have run so long they would be loving deer chases. We could have ours back and steady be killing rabbits while he was applying psychology to his. He really get touchy when someone hits a nerve, and he knows their telling the truth. Ouch Joe! Loosen up! Your loosing what little creditability that you did have by blowing up when you don't undrestand something!

Just like using a collar responsibly isn't a bad thing, dogs can, have been, and still are being broke without collars.
I've broken dogs from running deer with and without collars. It can be done both ways. Yes you can cut them off to catch them. I've got bad knees and a broken back and been able to do it. You don't follow behind them, you cut them off along the track. I use a collar now because though I could catch them the pain I suffered later wasn't worth it. They ran the deer, let them hurt, not me.
Just for what it's worth....I enjoyed this thread at first, but now it seems to have resorted to name calling, etc. Joe's not completely wrong in everything he has said and some are saying. The guys using the collars are not completely wrong in what they've said as Joe has said. Collars used responsibly can be a usefull training tool, used incorrectly no! Joe has valid points about the results of some things collars can do. They can cause negative reactions, but so can shaking, whipping, etc.
Now that I've probably pi--ed off both sides I'll quit.

It is probably easier to run down a dog or cut him off in a corn field in Illinois but just come down here and try it. You'll have the collars on in no time. I grew up chasing deer hounds and cutting them off ain't as easy as one would think unless you have slow hounds or flat terrain that you can see a long ways. Then again, you could just be lucky and be at the right place at the right time.

Beagleman, nobody said Joe was wrong on all his ideas. He's just wrong about some of the things he says about shock collars. Seems like he's the one that's always sticking his foot in his mouth. I agree with you 100%. dogs can be broken with other methods. If it works, it's great. Results with out any lasting side effects is what we're after anyway, isn't it? There's a lot of people on here that has a lot of years of experince on training dogs and know what they have learned (from trial and error at times) works. I just don't think Joe has an open mind and therefore don't think he knows half what he thinks he does. He's never offered one thread of proof that he knows whats going on with the shock collar. As for as name calling he's doing a pretty good job if it himself. You read what he said about people like him that stoop to that level. I agree with him on that.
Everyone else gets on here and tries to help with any questions and when they answer then Joe starts telling them how wrong they are. I just hope some young beagler don't read some of his bull and think it's all truth because we all know better.
Beagleman no one's pi---d at you, you have a right to your opinion just like anyone. However I do respect what you have to say, unlike someone else one here.

Aw whats the matter girls? You can dish it out but can't take it? Want me to go away now? Too bad. You ladies wanted to open your pie holes so now you'll get a little of your own medecin. I have changed my mind and am not aginst you girls useing a shock collar because you are incapable of training hounds without them. They're just plain too smart for ya's. Hey maybe if you tried brace hounds; oops sorry I forgot you guys already do that.
Hey wingpatch I tried to stop reading the funny papers but you keep posting here.
Chris. Your right my hounds could not possibly compete with yours in a field trial. Mine are hunting hounds. But maybe if I get a collar you guys can teach me to make mine backwards too. Or wait maybe if I cut their legs off they could go slow enough to be in your trials.
Hey you guys got to have some real old dogs to have a hundred years experiance with shock collars. Is that part of the trial thing, wait for the dog to go senile? Hey I might be ready I got an old shepherd her that's blind, deaf, and arthritic can I enter him? Nah forget it he's not stupid enough for you guys.

Field trial? What in hell are you talking about? Where'd I say anything about a field trial? As far as hunting hounds go, if you ever get ballsy enough top compare rabbits brought to the gun, look me up. As a matter of fact, any time you're ready, I'll spot you 8 years -- we'll compare my top 3 dog's last 2 years to your top 3 dogs dogs last 10 years. If you're going to get diarrhea of the mouth and talk gundogs with me I wager you've bitten off a tad more than you can chew.Joe West wrote:Chris. I'm not getting the impression that this is all in fun anymore, Joe. You've gone off the flippin' deep end.

Folks, Joe is getting out of hand. His hand was called and he couln't come through. I think it's time for Joe to go to bed because he's lost it. I really enjoyed this thread and all the comments. I kept thinking joe would try and back up some of his comments but to date he hasn't. I think everyone needs to remember this the next time he gets invloved in a discussion. He's all talk with nothing to back up his words.
Joe, I often wonder what you are reading to come up with those idiotic replys you come up with. Joe I'll say one thing, you sure came out looking like a fool in this discussion.
How old are you? 13? 15 maybe?

I like the way I do it and I have tweeked that a little by reading what Phillip, and Joe, and lots of other folks have said on this and other threads I have read about the same thing.
Good job I would say what do ya'll say?
