I must admit.....I have had this happen to me before as a PP judge and I awarded a strike to the dog on the clock. I think this is really a judgement call that could go either way. Here is how mine went....I had a dog strike in and on the clock, and the entire pack came to him and was acting rabbity, tails working back and forth, but only 1 dog had barked. We were in a weed field with a creek down center. I seen a baby rabbit come by me but the dogs were all working it the other way from where I was standing....they kept crossing this creek back and forth...then I was getting some pop off barks from other dogs in the cast on the other side of the creek.
All of this was happening within 30 yards of me. 4 minutes was coming up and I had to make a call......either minus a dog for showing me a rabbit it couldnt find, or produce it and hope they worked it out. I chose to produce the rabbit since I had seen it. I didnt actually see the dog back track since it hadnt ran it the right way yet.
I dont think they can run the track backwards, until after they run it forward. If that makes any sense.
Best to you.

Unless you put on the rabbit, you must plus point the dog that struck the rabbit. The reason is...a rabbit was produced..thats what the rules say. Now, if it ran 50 ft backwards..minus the dog for backtracking also. There is no rule against that.

strike the dog positive he did smeel rabbit u knew that just didnt have the line righht and u already said scenting was real bad...i dont consider it backtracking unless the have already ran the line in this case they hadnt .dead track it after a bit and try putting them on it farther down headed the right way and go from 1st break down.

To me, a strike is credited when, a hound opens AND forward progress is made on the line. Surely no credit is to be given to a hound that opens and backtracks a marked line, while speaking w/out ever correcting himself and making forward progress on the line?
To me, he gets a -10 for opening and being unable to make forward progress on the line within the 3 min's he's was allowed.
He didn't show you the rabbit, as the rabbit was jumped by one of the field, so it was the same as his opening on a line, and not being able too run and make forward progress on within the 3 mins.
A hound may hit a line in the middle and go the wrong way BUT, should correct himself, then, when he's sure of himself, open, to proclaim the find and call in his packmates...One who opens and gives tongue while going backwards is lacking direction sense of the line and shows his lack of brain and abundance of mouth...
...he joy is speaking on scent and he cares not/or lack the ability of direction sense...
As in this example, the line does not have to have already been ran to be certain of this backtracking fault and he pulls the other hounds the wrong way, but what's sad is, in the 3 mins, NONE of the others show him a fool and go back in the correct direction.

no strike can be awarded if the rabbit is jumped by the judge, handler or spectator if they are put on the track. if the judge did not put the dogs on the track the first dog to hit the line and bark three times gets the strike as long as the line was produced. you cant minus a dog for hitting the middle of the track and going the wrong way unless they have already ran the track.
If the dogs had to put on the line strike/jump are not open. The judge scores from the first check.
In that case it sounds like the dogs never really showed the line.
They have to run a line and break down for 15 seconds to have a check, they never had the line.
I would expect the judge to give them time to work it out. If no progress was made call dead track and move to another area with no score.

a rabbits produced, a hound opens on the produced track should get plus
10 if the hounds run backwards of the rabbit track this is not considered
backtracking unless the track has already been covered. when the hounds
stop i would open check and give them time to workout the track. the next
hound that opens and makes forward progress would get a check. when
scenting conditions are really tough is when you should see those high
scores. alot of times you can see the rabbit and watch the hounds work
the track they may only go twenty feet before the fifteen seconds opens
up another check. i will always get out noised on these days.

The dogs have to show the rabbit is produced and make progress on a line before opening the check.
In this case, the dogs never made progress on the line.
To make progress on the line, a dog or pack has to line up and push out the line. If they run the line the wrong way it is not progress.
If they move forward on the line but keep coming back they are not progressing the line.
Yes you saw a rabbit and you know where the line is. Strike jump is not open because the dogs were put on the line. They have to make progress on the line before the check comes open. These dogs never made progress. No score, dead track, move to another area.

i agree if you put the hounds on the track. but if you don't then you have
a dog on the clock that is barking on a rabbit that you have seen. so your
saying that after that three minutes you would minuse the dog on the clock for not producing the track? (silverzuk)

Yes, the dog would be minused because they didn't show you the line.
Once the third bark comes out, that hound is on the clock.
The dog, or pack, has to show you a line and make progress on it.
That did not occur in this case, so you have to minus the dog that is on the clock.
Think of the same situation where you did not see the rabbit.
You are walking along and one dog barks 3 times, runs 50-100 feet, breaks down, comes back, the dogs do not progress a line.
You now have a dog on the clock and it either has to produce (pull out on a line and run it) or get minused. Once it is on the clock it has to get +10 or -10 points.
Just because you saw the rabbit doesn't mean anything other than you are 100% sure where the rabbit ran. We've all seen rabbits that the pack could not run.

its just hard for me to minuse a dog thats opening on a rabbit i know what
your saying but to me the dog has opened on a produced rabbit. my take
on the rule is for a loose mouth dog or one that opens on a two day old
feeder track. in the situation that were discussing tracking was bad that
day and more than likely if you would have put them on the track were
you last seen it they probably couldn't run it. i still would plus the dog.
also the rule says to produce the rabbit dosen't say anything about the
line.

My dog minused out yesterday.
I 100% guarantee that he was mouthing on a rabbit track each time, they just didn't produce the rabbit within 3 minutes. Other dogs were popping off with him, one or two others got minus points.
There were other dogs that pulled minuses in that cast, there were some dogs that pulled minuses that day that had never pulled one before.
It was just a tough day for scenting conditions. Rules are rules, the best dog doesn't always win. Just think of that scenario if you didn't see the rabbit.
