Was this first hand knowledge or where you there. Seems like the dogs being field champions would verify the type of hounds they are. I heard Bill Jack won alot more hunts than was required. I saw the Slim dog the other day he was nice looking hound, I am considering taking a bitch to him. If they did run one who cares at least I know they got some fire to them.

Slim Jim or Billy Jack

Post by KanesIrish »

I'm a big Slim Jim fan. I judged Slim in his first trial, a tough picky day at Palmer back in 2000. He took a 3rd that day in a group of hounds that were placing all the time. The winner was NoGo's Rupert, 2nd was FC Hog Hollow Harvey, 4th was now FC NoGo's Tonto, and NBQ was a hound out of Proper Baron and an FC T bitch. That day Slim was a little rough but got a lot done. Last year I judged him at Paskamansett and it was a tough call and he took 2nd behind Eastcreek's Zanderman. Slim stayed tight on a the check, and did an awesome job picking up a check when everybody else left. People characterize Slim as a ROUGH ROUGH ROUGH hound, but I don't think he's that bad. I've seen him do some awesome work...especially at Mid Valley when he finished for his title.

As far as Billy Jack goes, not a big fan. Billy Jack on a scale of 1-10 for speed is a 9.5 and he has a habit of going over the end. He does lead the pack around but if the hare takes a hard turn expect a big over run. Personally I don't mind this unless the dog gets cleaned from behind and that's usually the case. However Billy Jack is becoming quite the producer, he has two pups out there with wins(Don's Northway Mike and Northway Shaft).

My choice is Northway Slim Jim.

just breed a big 15" Northway female to Slim Jim.He is built like a tank, very good looking hound.
What would YOU rate Slim Jim's footspeed at?
This female is a good 9 on a scale of 1 to 10.She is very like most the Northway hounds i owned or have ran with, brains, speed, hunt, desire, bottom, control, etc.

Slim is just as fast as Billy Jack. He's at a 9. Don't get me wrong Slim can get rough as well and he had a streak there when Paul was liking a win on him that he couldn't stay in a field trial, but at the same time I think he's a better dog. A lot of people here in the Northeast have this same discussion at most every trial...whose better Billy or Slim? Wayne Heckley who is probably the best judge of hounds here in the Northeast was telling me that people had been asking him that...and he said he didn't really know then two weeks in a row he gave wins to Slim Jim, so he thinks Slim is the better hound.

As far as Northway hounds running deer goes...they do. Most all of them do, and its tough to break them, that has been my experience. My father and I line breed Chico's Northway Venture and I have a kennel full of Northway blood. I have two nice running dogs out of Northway Driver and my father's FC Kane's Irish Mist, however both will drop a hare for a deer. The good thing is that the bitches pups won't even go near one.

Hope this helps.

Good info. I will say slim jim is a really nice looking dog. I guess I have been lucky most of my dogs have alot of Northway in them and I have not had a deer problem. But like everything they are dogs and are prone to run one the very next time I take them out. THe deer outnumber the rabbits where I run so I guess I am lucky.

Thanks Kane for the info.

I have a dog pup that is most all line bred on his dam's side.He has Spur I think 6 or 7 times on the bottom, also Driver, Slim Jim, and Jumpmaster among others His dam is Tacket's Power Girl out of Slim Jim x Perkin's Run-N-Gun New Hope. His peds are listed on World peds. under Barry Power Bocephus. He's just a young gun yet but I have high hopes for him, especially after reading some of these posts. Thanks Guys ! CHH

A Vet. can give your female a shot to bring her in season. A friend of mine just did it with a female that was very hard to get her to come in and even harder to get her to take but says she has a belly full of pups now.
