Now I am not trying to start any trouble, but maybe someone could tell me if it is any driffrent now. The AKC trials I have been to the judges would have it easy. This is because all the dogs I saw involved never hunted. The gallery had tally ho sticks beating on everything to get a rabbit up. Then they put the dogs on the track, but the judges never broke a real sweat because they saw everything from a near walk, or light jog. This was in SPO format. These dogs would be totally useless to me because they would never jump a rabbit to run it. Like the man said above, the proff of a rabbit dog is the rabbits in the bag day in, and day out. Not what some judge says it is or aint. It seems to me if the judges picked up the dogs for not hunting, there would be no trail because no dog would be left on the ground. There is no perfect trail format boys. Maybe someone could tell me if these dogs are any better now than then? I like real hounds that HUNT, JUMP, RUN, and BRING THE RABBIT TO MY GUN AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. They cant be lazy doing it. Those type hounds are the real Champions, and Grand Champions.

I dont know where you went but Midwest hounds are really not much different than lp hounds . I have seen in the past the cream of the crop lp hounds making the midwest transition .As for not hunting ? I will not feed any dog that can not jump, trail a rabbit back to the gun . I actually enjoyed the midwest . My advice is go to a trial , you tell me if judging is easy . Them midwest boys are pretty smart though they get horses at times . As far as buddy judging its every where. No format is perfect .
This is unfortunate but its life . Deal with it , judge , or stay home .

Tommy,

I know what you mean about the talley ho sticks. I was looking at a couple of dogs to by to enhance my pack years ago. The guy had a 4' stick in his hand a couple of dogs on the ground. As we walked around his pen I would tell the dogs to "find em" due to them standing around watching us. The Gent said, "don't talk to them, be quiet." We walked around his enclosure with the dogs in tow. They never hunted. He would tap on brush piles with this stick. When he flushed a rabbit he said watch this. He then said softly, "tally ho, tally ho, tally ho." Those two dogs ran over to him and picked the line up and proceeded to advance it. I won't say how fast they were but, if they ran as fast and as much as they gave tongue they would be 'speed demons'

Oh, I went hunting with a group of guys that trialed in the spo here in Eastern VA, all 4 hunters had slings on their guns worn on their backs and sticks in their hands. They didn't talk to their dogs until they flushed a rabbit with their "tally ho sticks" The dogs ran like a train on the track but there was no hunt in them. This was a couple of years ago. "To each is own" Tally Ho, Tally Ho :D

i have only been to one akc trial it was this past weekend in jackson oh,yeh they used tally ho sticks, but if a dog wasn't hunting,it got picked up quick.this is only my opinion but i think the sticks are to get up rabbits quick,it was a 25 dog hunt and it took all day, they were judging pretty much in the daerk at the end,and when the judges got back to the clubhouse they where covered in blood and digging thorns out of their bodies with knives a gent walked up to a judge and handed him a $100 bill for judging and the judge said that it was too much, boys they aint no way i would or could do that.my hats off to them men,it aint about the money,it is the love of the sport, that guy was from sw ky .that wouldn't cover his gas,let alone motel and food, some of you all give them hell, yeah i have seen bad ones, but these guys got my props.check back after i hit a few more,my opinion may change but as for now i am impressed.25 dog hunt in arha lp,everyone is home for the bucks games win or loose:lol:

Thanks for the replies boys. I guess SPO has not changed. Jimmy maybe I will get the chance one day to run Midwest format. No, judgeing is not easy as I know first hand. I cannot judge as much as I did before, and not going to even try to do so. Good to hear from you, and please tell Wayne I said hi next time you see him. I miss the ole days, and the people that was doing Little Pack then. Time makes a change in all of us. I still have the good memories though.
