dog not packing up
i have an AKC registered female about a year and half old. I run her with my own dogs and she runs great. She fights for the front, picks up checks, and has a considerable amount of foot. But the second i put her in a pack with strange dogs she will either stay at my feet or she will wait till the other dogs jump a rabbit and then she will go off hunting by herself. i sent her to a training pen to run with nothin but strange dogs for two weeks and still nothing. Does anybody have any ideas on how i could get her to pack up. Will layin her out for a few weeks help?
I would have to say that the your dog will never pack with strange dogs. I am in the same situation as you are in. I have a female 2 year old that will not pack up with strange dogs no matter what you do she will stay at your feet and to be honest it is embarrassing. But when she is running with her kennel mates there is no stopping her when she is locked on a rabbit. There is nothing you can do but keep trying or do like me and leave her home when it is time to run with others.

I agree this sounds like to much solo time but this dog has never been soloed as far as I know. A little history on this dog: We sent her to a starting pen to get her started. When she was first getting going she would not quit hunting a warm track to go to the other dogs if they jumped a rabbit, even if it was close to her. We started picking her up and putting her in with the other dogs and she quickly figured out what was expected and got a lot better at honoring the other dogs. We were also running her occasionaly with strange dogs and she was doing okay but picked up the habit of backtracking from a dog one day and we had to start shocking her to fix that problem. We were reluctant to put her with strange dogs after that for a while but when we did we did not notice any problems until a few weeks ago when we took her to a trial and she totally ignored the other dogs in the cast and refused to honor them. Very frustrating as this dog seems to be progressing very nicely until this problem came up.

A couple of additional questions. This female will be 2 next month and we were hoping to do some breeding with her in the future but now not sure. Is this a type of problem that will likely be passed on to her pups? Sure don't want to put more hounds out with this problem. Also, I have heard that dogs change sometimes after having a litter so could that help her to mature and get past this problem?

Your dog lacks conficence and is being intimidated by the strange surroundings/dogs. Try taking her to all the trials and not running her. Just let her hang out until she gets comfortable. I sold a male pup to a friend. Later he tried to trial him and he acted the same way when he first started trialing him. He is ok now.

I had a male that was similar. Only difference was, he would on occasion, go, if the rabbit was up. Wouldn't do any searching with other dogs. And there were other issues, but when he was with his kennel mates, he'd hunt and run his heart out. One thing that I had thought would have helped him, was kenneling him at different kennels, for a month or two. Also run the dog with a mixture of kennel mates and strange dogs, and gradually reduce the number of kennel mates, till eventually you're only running one kennel mate, with the dog, then to a point of all strange dogs. I never was able to do this, but thought it may work. I wouldn't bred a dog with this type of fault.
