What kind of mouth do you prefer on your best hound and why? Some say they like the chop mouth because it's constant and up beat. Others say they like a big bawl or a bugle mouth because they can here them farther and it's more houndy. Not to many beaglers like the squeal or squall because it's annoying I suppose. Then there's the flip side of the coin with the OPINIONS about these types of mouth that some beaglers consider FACT.

Most of my dogs have a heavy chop mouth. I have a couple that have squall mouths and they seem to carry better at a far away distance. But there's nothing better than that ground poundin' chop mouth.

They are all special in there own way - just like the hounds that have them! As long as I can pick out the individual in a big pack, I am happy. Sound-wise, I like a long bawl best. However, I am not willing to own a beagle that constantly loses the line or moves slower due throwing its head back to bark (or one that barks out of place no matter how pleasing the sound). I once had a female that had a short, high pitched bark- that is probably the only reason I was able to buy her! Her voice was definitely not real pleasing to me at first and I even considered selling her for that reason. However, I could always pick her out during a trial cast. I sure miss hearing that voice now that she is gone!

I personally love to listen to a BIG bawl mouth. I have a male here that sounds just like a woman screaming when he opens and uses that same mouth the entire run. The first time he opened on track at about 5 months old he scared me to death with that dieing scream as I thought he had gotten into a trap or something.
Mr.Terry I've heard that some bawl mouth hounds constantly move the line slower because they have to lift their heads to proclaim the rabbits every foot step and all the while the trail is getting colder which in some cases it turns into a total lost. Does the bawl mouth hound that has to lift his/her head to proclaim the rabbits every move lack brains or nose? Can bawl mouth hounds move the line quicker with his/her head up all the while making progress of over taking the quarry if they have a really good nose? John
The best beagle that I have ever seen was a bawl mouth that changed pitch by how hot or cold the trail was. He didn't lose the track due to having a bawl mouth. I have seen the same hound track swamp rabbits aross the swamp in water that was deep enough that he sometimes had to dog paddle and he never lost a step.
This dog was exceptional and perhaps the exception to the rule BUT do not give up on a hound with a bawl mouth! I hope to someday have a beagle that is as good as Billy was. I truly miss this great hound.
There were many times when he treed rabbits and would be found bawling and digging a whole in the ground where the swamp rabbit took cover to shake him. But as far as losing the track is concerned the rabbit had no chance once Billy bawled that high pitch tune.
