A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Guys, my female came into heat about a month ago, and I thought we were careful not to allow her to breed. Now, I'm not so sure we were careful enough. She's gained a bunch of weight, and her appetite is huge.
Is there some way, short of going to the vet, that you could know for sure if she is pregnant or not? Cause if she ain't, it's time for a major diet.
Just hang in there,, you'll know soon!!!!! False pregnacies are not out of the question!!!! My Savannah went through this on her last heat,, the dang hound ate us out of house and home LOL....
Put your fingers under her belly right between her back legs, or mabe a little forward, and push upward gently. If she is bred you will feel little balls about half the size of a golf ball. If you feel nothing she is not bred.
I have found that the three weeks of confinement along with no exersize for those three weeks allows them to put on a good bit of weight. If she is..... you will know in another week or so.
Just keep her on her regular diet. Is she on free feed?? I would put her on bout a cup a day is she is around a 20 lb hound. If she is pregnant this is what she would probably need anyway. Don't want to over feed her cause this will make big pups and trouble with whelping.
If she is between 25 and 30 days bred you can try to palpate for puppies. at this time they feel like marbles but, after about 30 days they start to spread out and you cannot feel them. I would just treat her as though she is bred at this point and wait and see. A few weeks and you should know for sure.
I think you all are right....I'll try not to get too excited just yet. Problem is, if she is bred she was bred by her son. A little too close for my taste.
Anyone want some free Christmas pups?

LOL ... But I feel your pain ...
EXACT same scenario played out here a few weeks ago. My Branko bitch came into heat, we seperated her as usual from the males. Had the males outside, bitches inside, but of course, someone opened the door to feed the males & guess who escaped and tied with her 10 month old dog puppy in a matter of seconds???
This was the first few days of the cycle, maybe day 5, give or take. We're hoping it didn't take, especially because she just had a litter this April. Not too thrilled with having pups that inbred, either, lol.
Wife took her to the vet Saturday, he took one look at her and said "so when is she due"? Sigh.....she's pregnant.
I came home, and she does this thing where she'll get as close as she can to me, lay her head up under my chin, and just whine as I talk to her. I was calling her the kennel slut and the wife made me stop.
