TAB, magazine questions
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
I agree with hare hunter, too many pages of trial results, not enough about hunting or anything not trial based. I have only gotten 5 months worth of my first and last year subscription, so I at least don't know what I'm missing. It seems it's all advertising or pages upon pages of trial results for trials I'll never attend. It was the good reutation the magazine has while under Bev's direction that had me subscribe, I was pretty suprised by what I got, sorry to say but it takes me two minutes to leaf through the pages and I rarely pick it up after that.
I have subscribed to TAB from the very first issue. I remember Bev talking about starting a small, flyer type circular for the beagling world that evolved into The American Beagler, a full-fledged, first-class magazine. Heck I even NAMED the magazine (well, my suggestion and Beverely used it). ........Bev done a first-rate job, but sad to say since the change of ownership, I will not be renewing my subscription.

This is a great topic. First of all let me say that I believe you should subscribe to every magazine you can afford to get perspectives. As for The American Beagler... This magazine will become a great magazine more by YOUR (OUR) input than by what is done by the owners. The owners resolved the issue of timely delivery immediately. Their organizational skills, professionalism, and integrity are unsurpassable. The content of a magazine like this is dependent on the input of it's subscribers. I believe everyone reading this post either has valuable knowledge to share or knows someone with valuable knowledge. Send an article on a topic that is of interest to you or if you know someone that is knowledgable about a certain topic ask them to contribute. I don't think it even needs to be typed since the article will be reformated for the magazine. Someone correct me if I am wrong, please. So I believe the question should be "How can each of us contribute information that will be shared with fellow beaglers to help the beagle breed reach it's full potential?". Be a part of the solution and give something back to the sport you love. Dan M

I have to disagree with you Dan, though I applaud your positive way of thinking. I think the responsibility of weather or not TAB survives or flounders rests soley on the shoulders of the current owners. If THEY want to increase THEIR circulation THEY will/should change the format to better suit the majority of their readers.

I can only speak for myself, but I would like to see the magazine better reflect the sport of beagling as a whole, not just the trialing aspect of the sport. To put it bluntly, for me there just isn't any real reading in the magazine, it's seems to be pages upon pages of either advertising or trial results and standings. Which might be what the people want, it's just not what I want. It says on this sight that "TAB covers all aspects of the care, conditioning and training of the best rabbit dogs in the world", did I miss these articles?
I'm a beginning beagler and there is next to nothing in the magazine for guys/gals like me, even the Q&A section in this months isssue is about the finer points of scoring a check or what not, not very interesting for a beginer and a hunter. I'm a hunter only right now, and the bottom line is the issues I have received of TAB lead me to belive that it is a trialing magazine first and foremost, which is not for me.

Ok. Let's start a list of topics that readers might be interested in. If you look at the boards you will see what folks are asking about. Answer some of the questions that they post.
I for one am always looking for health information. Here are some of the things that are always asked on the boards.
1. information on breeding - whelping pens, first signs of labor, when to breed, dogs heat cycle, picking a stud, keeping the pups warm or cool, health of the dam, shots, worming and on and on and on. Wish I had a nickel for everytime this is asked on the boards. I would be rich.
2. Then you have all those dreaded dog diseases. Parvo, distemper, lepto, brucilosis, coccidia, kennel cough.
3. Somebody is always asking about starting a hound.
4. Then there are those articles about hunting trips.
5. It is always nice to read articles about famous beaglers. A biography!!! Sort of brings em up close and personal.
I can add more, but how bout you guys adding some.

It really does help to list what sort of things you wants to see, then submit those things you can. I used to go scrounging for this type article or that because it would be something we hadn't covered in a while, or it would be related to the season we were in (How to heat Kennels, etc.) For some reason that just seemed second nature to me. Whatever I was going thru with my own dogs/kennel, I figured others were, too.
I'm light on travel stories (yay, lol!) for November issue, but I will be submitting a really good, indepth article on Leptospirosis for it. Why? Because as I mentioned in my last Editorial, my vet has told me there's a resurgence in the country of Lepto cases, and he revaccinated my dogs for it. This is how it goes.
Then I had people like Emery. Darrin, Tom Shannon, Rick G. and the northern writers who always had a good hunting story or training article, and didn't need me to solicit them. If you have a specialty. share it with the readers by submitting an article. If you think it needs editing first, send it to me as usual, and I will pass it along.
I hate to see so many unhappy with the mag (but I wish they had left the cover alone, too, LOL! I pled for it.) They want their own look. I understand that. Just keep your input coming and hopefully we will all benefit.

it might help a little if the new owners would get on here where we all talk and discuss things and look around and see what is being discussed..i finally got to meet the new owner and he seems like a nice fella but as in my opinion most of the discussion happens here and should flow over into the mag bev has always put in her opinion on here and if the new owners will get involved on this site they too might have more insight aboput what there readers want to read about...jmo

Hearld, I knew I'd forget somebody important when I started listing writers. Should never have done that. Thank you for your articles over the years. You were my Horticulture guy and rabbit hunt story guy. Remember when I found out about your background in horticulture? Immediately I was hitting you up for an article about the best cover for starting/running pens (lol), and you delivered.
I'm serious about the articles. Send them to me, If they need polishing, I will polish, and then off to the Ridenhours they go. I bet they would print them.
