Bev--first of all in ARHA or AKC you are not judging a pack of hounds but rather the BEST hound for that day and that cast--so why the importance on pack hounds???? if a rabbit is jumped your hound should want to be competitive and go to the sound of a hound when rabbit is jumped--hark in,so to speak-right???I don't know about othe hounds just the ones i have in my kennel/app 20 hounds and a few young hounds, but all hunt with me,ask anyone that has hunted with me,Anthony Johnson,Alabama John and others and i not only have my bloodline but several other bloodlines and my hounds hunt with me and do not range out of hearing when i am in the field with them.Anthony brought four of his best for me to let free roam and put rabbit tracks in front of them and i have three new ones--two is just going out of heat and one male has been running loose sinse the second day in order to put the tracks in front of him and see what he is made of and he knows where home is and even being a new member he hunts with me when i am in the field, case and point, you either have an intellengent hound or a dumb one and a dumb one will care les about hunting with you--we all know people we don't care to hunt with.so guess some hounds feel the same way.If my way is so wrong why do others that see my hounds run want me condition and to run their hounds for them!!!!!!

Every try yard working the dog and or the use of an ecollar?

Let me explain my thoughts on running loose.I let my pups run loose as much as possble. They trail mice, birds, chickens, rabbits what ever at 3-5 months around the yard.A buddy has a four month old that will circle a rabbit around his yard now. They learn more about getting around creeks and thickets and livestock and cars and trucks running loose.Does not mean I'm never around watching.I'm doing chores and peddling close by.I do yard training as well.I spend lots of time with them just walking and letting them explore.Pups will learn more in a setting like that or Reb's than one up on wire will in 5 times the time.

Handlling problems can be dealt with via my choice or Joe's run em down and shake the S*+* out of em give proper yard training and a dog with a brain that is worth working with :-)

For the most part I think hounds have brains but sometimes I think it's us who confuse them most. ...Patch

You better believe I did. From a check cord to a Tri-Tronics Beagler collar! She had gotten so set in her ways of hunting with nobody else around there was no breaking her from it (at least during the time I owned her). Her new owner was very happy with her. He lived on a rural farm and just turned her out and listened to her run while working the farm. He didnt mind that she would not hunt with him, for he bought her just for pleasure running and for a little "hound music" to fill the air while working the farm. I am convinced the free roam was what made this dog the way she was. Her Dam and Sire was neither like that, I hunted over them many times. Also I know for a fact at least another one of her littermates was the same way and ended up flat on a roadway :( It could have been something hidden in her genes, I dont know for a fact and never will, but I believe the free roam was what caused the problem with these two particular bitches, maybe it dont hurt all of them, but with these two, I really believe it did and it convinced me to never let my hounds free roam.

DarrinG==I think you just got hold of a couple very independent beagles and this happens sometimes, but it is all in the genetics and some even get so independent they will not hark nor run with a strange pack and prefer to run totally on their own, their way and basicly are not clicking on all cyclinders, like shy hounds that come from shy parents, but than i have had shy hounds and their offspring not show it in any way and love attention. If you have a pup or hound that wants to please,no matter what, you are going to have a hound that will hunt with you and be eager to show you what it can do in the field.Ever have a young hound start a track or jump a rabbit and come back to you??as if it is smiling and wanting your attention??well what it really wants is for you to join in the fun it is having,so you take it and put it back on the track, pet it and encourage it to continue and before long it knows it is doing what you want it to and it no longer comes back, once the track is found or rabbit jumped.
