Heat for Kennel

I have above ground kennels and I have been looking for some ideas to heat them on the real cold nights and for use in a whelping pen. Do any of you guys have any suggestions. Thanks. Danny

Well , i dont know how your kennels are set up but , i also have above ground kennels . What had done though is i have there runs outside of the shed and they sleep in the shed and i just run an electric heater or a kerosen heater on them cold nights in the winter.

Either put a 100w light bulb in there where the dogs can't get to it or load the box with straw. Straw is plenty warm enough for most nights above -10. Also consder insulating the outside of the boxes.

My kennels are under roof but not in a shed.

I use a heat lamp with a regular flood light-type bulb and clip it to the underneath side of their box so it's shining up on the floor. I only do this if it is extremely cold or if there are young pups in the box. My boxes are insulated and seal out most of the cold air. That, along with some bedding (straw, shavings, etc.) is all it usually takes to keep my beagles warm.

Ihave used an electric heating pad for years on my dogs. just put somthing over it so it doesnt getto hot (blanket)

Here is what I started using last season and it worked well for me...
Get a metal cookie tin...must be atleast 5 or 6 inches deep....
rig a lamp kit to it from the side and cut a hole in the lid of the tin....
Make sure you put some sort of metal screen over the lid hole to keep hounds from getting burned or breaking the bulb.......mount on inside roof of dog box or on door...
here are some precautions...
the electric cord must be covered with wire or something to keep the dog from chewing onit....
keep the heater mounted high enough so that no straw or shavings can reach the bulb...
do not use anything more than a 60 watt bulb...anything more may cause a fire,,,,
when placing lid onto the tin..use a metal sheet screw to attach it and also some electrical tape to secure the lid...
this is for reference only...this is a rough design that i found in a B & B issue from last year...
