teaching pups to back off in kennel?

Post by wkendarcher »

when i open the door to my above ground kennel to feed the pups of course are trying to jump out. what tips do you have on teaching them to back off until i feed them or i,m ready for them to come forward. I,ve read on here some where that you need to teach that but i don,t have a clue. I,m new at this training. the two pups are 10 wks old now and are broke to come to a whistle. :???:

Keep a squirt bottle with water in it ready when you go to open their door or gate. Tell them first to "back up" while you remove their bowl to fill it. If they don't, give them a spritz in the face. Fill their bowl outside the kennel, then do the same when you put it back in. Or, use the 2-bowl method: keep one outside, fill it, and when you put it in the pen, take the empty one out for the next day. That will minimize the time spent fumbling around inside the pen.

Normally, we let ours down each evening and while they're running around the yard, we clean pens and change water. When we bring out the food bucket, they all start heading for their respective pens because they know they get fed there. Even the tiniest of pups will kennel up on their own into an above-ground pen if you put them some sort of ramp they can crawl up to their door. We did this with Dolly's litter of ten and it was a hoot to watch them. :haha:

Whatever method you use, repetition is they key.

Yep, what Bev said (repetition) along with consistancy... Maybe this is one and the same in some people's books, but I thought that I would throw it in there just for good measure.

Good luck,
Emery
