big nose

Post by Big Dog »

Matt I have to say from my experience the two go hand in hand. Every dog that I have seen with a really big nose would open early from time to time. Some were worst than others but all would open early from time to time. Solo work seems to tighten them up a little as they seem to figure out what is runnable and what isn't. I currently have 3 dogs that will open early all of them have superior noses and I have witnessed them run when others couldn't. The one that opens the earliest by far has the best nose. I have seen her run baby rabbits with other dogs in tow who couldn't smell it at all or at least very little. I don't like opening early, but I will sacrifice an extra bark or two for more nose.

i'll take my ole pine mt. dog that doesn't bark till the rabbit in running anytime over a dog with what i call a cold nose. :D but that is just what i grew up hunting with and i like it when the dog barks the hammer drops. and i like a dog with a big nose but what good is a nose if he doesn't have the brain to shutup.......

This topic seems to get beat to death and comes back for more  Unless you are a dyed in the wool trial guy or you shoot off the jump, I dont understand what the concern would be with a dog that opens early and can still run the hare or rabbit. All the big nosed/cold nose dogs that Ive seen opened when they could run the hare or rabbit and I personally couldnt care less if that was before any other hound had decided the rabbit was "up". Why would anyone want a tight mouth cold nosed dog?

I would love to have a pen full of big nosed tight mouth dogs. (probably have a couple) It would be a sight for sore eyes. I think Matt would too! ;) Wayne

My Kalagha bred dog is tight mouthed but he can run when some of my others can't. He is getting looser as he gets older but he's still tight with it.

rjg...Ron

Mine is running great along with her littermates. She is going to be sweet. She can lock on and not loose it like her sire. Ton of HUNT too. Keep me posted

One of my favorite dogs...

HOF Dailey's Driffter...I have gunned with this dog many times. He is as honest as they come and his nose is unbelievable. I have never been out on a day that he could not run. We get some pretty nasty days here on cold dry snow.

He retrieves to boot...
