If the dog won't bark, how do you know if its got a big nose?

I guess what I wanted to say is a hound with a HUGE nose but never opens before the rabbit is up.

ok i have a dog thats kinda like this. he's one of the best jump dogs ive owned in a longtime. he gives now mouth hardly until hes burning the pants off it it. he usally barks about twice so i know hes got a good track and usally the next time he opens the race is on. now the only thing about him if you run him alot by himself after he gives the bark or two letting you know he's jumped the rabbit he'll run silent. now if hes running with another dog or two he'll give plenty of mouth don't know why this is but like i say he's one of the hardest hunting hounds ive had in awhile and a really good jump dog.

It can be a disadvantage in hunting beagle trials but I don't like a dog to strike till it can produce the rabbit without help.

I have a dog like what you are describing. She is a GRHBCH. I could count on one hand the number of times she has taken a minus in a trial for not producing a rabbit. If she just barely whimpers I stike her.

I have a male that is just like that. He is a HBCH with 2 wins towards his grand....I know that when he barks it is definately a rabbit and it's running...Yes in hunting beagle it is a big disadvantage sometimes but sometimes it is a life saver....If it is a good running rabbit I will make my strike points up if we score some lines though....I am very happy with him...

I understand a hound that will not open until the rabbit is up. And that is great. BUT do they have an UNREAL NOSE. Track a rabbit down a blacktop road or hard ICE snow and run it and run it and run it. And at the same time on that HARD FROSTY morning they Open only when the rabbit is up. And if you know of some what blodlines are they??

the male i got is a grade dog from a line of beagles that an old preacher keep going for about 40yrs. id say this male will influence alot of my breeding i know people thinks its crazy to breed grade to registerd but i feel that if im makin imporevments then im doing ok.

Matt the dog I mentioned in a previous reply is just the kind of dog your asking about. She is one of five pups out of the first litter between Brinsky's Run em Over Tank and Shannon's Little Lady II. Those five dogs are GRHBCH CH Rocky Ridge Morning Glory, GRHBCH CH Rocky Ridge Reaking Havoc, GRCH GRHBCH Rocky Ridge Ma Belle, GRHBCH Rocky Ridge Pardon My Dust, and HBCH Rocky Ridge Sock it to em Sassy. Ive seen all five of these dogs track on any terrain, all conditions, and never quit. Last year Glory drew her brother Dusty in a Grands cast at an NHBA hunt. It was about 85 degrees and hadnt rained in about two weeks. The first rabbit didnt stay up long at all but the second rabbit made several circles. We called a line going up this four wheeler hill climb. It was about thirty yards long. These two dogs RAN not walked down this dry dirt road and up the hill, scored the line and circled the rabbit two more times. It was actually so dry that you could see the dust flying up behind the dogs as they were running. Dusty beat me that day but it didnt matter, I was really impressed with the ability of these two dogs on such tough terrain and was very proud of both of them. [/b]

I have one. its Mark V and weir creek cross.In fact we have A hold kennel out of him and his brother. They or not super fast but honest mouthed strong track dogs. If you want to see A rabbit ran and ran and ran some more.LOL I mean when the track gets to the point dogs quit and go hunting or come in these dogs will keep on rejumping and running him some more. Honestly Matt, I've never seen one like you are asking about. All of mine that have above average nose DO open a few times before the rabbit is up. How is your female pup out of Hit Man X Bonnie XXIV coming along? The one I have is showing a TON of promise, and she's every bit as good looking as her full brother from the first cross who is also doing really well.

I had a dog that was super tight mouthed. Wouldn't open until she could really put pressure on the rabbit. I thought she had a week nose and this was the problem. Well she was just over two years old and we took her on a hare hunting trip up in the Northern MI.... The conditions were brutual and running was not all that great. We decided to hunt one more spot before we left for home. We dropped her and three other females out. They got a hare up within minutes and I could hear this bitch in there just nailing it.... None of the other dogs were giving any mouth. I couldn't figure it out. I walked out there and checked the tracks knowing she had always been straight but just couldn't beleive what I was hearing. Well this went on for about 1 1/2 hours with her driving like it was 40's and damp with no snow.... THe other dogs weren't saying a word..... To this day that day has always made me wonder what type of nose this bitch really had.... Unfortunately she was killed in the RD at a young age.... But from this performace I always thought she had a decent nose for how tight mouthed she was....

I had a little grade gyp a long time ago. She would open well before the rabbit was up, but never opened without producing. She would wind the rabbits from 10-20 feet away. She was the best jump dog I've ever seen and I'm still looking for another. They are few and far between.
