Which do you prefer to hunt?
Lets have some input on this subject. I like females for the most part. Most of the ones I have owned are all business. I just wish they had a "in season" and "out of season" switch on them!

females
Look at it this way English.....females do come in twice a year and it is aggrevating but a male dog stays in 24 hrs. a day, seven days a week,365 days a year.LOL.
size of dogs
I like 15" dogs myself never seen but one 13" dog that could hold out very long with 15" dogs.
Females
I keep 2 males on my place (English Coonhounds) for stud dogs, while there are occassionally males passing through, the rest of my dogs are all females, (English Coonhounds, Mt Curs, and Beagles) I wouldn't keep the stud dogs but for the efficiency of having them when I need them . I have nearby friends who keep Beagle and Cur studs. Females just handle so much better and usually don't let their hormones do their thinkng for them like males do.
Ideal hunting size
I keep mostly 13 inch females. Unless one is really into speed, speed, speed I can't see the advantage of larger beagles. The reason I keep females is simply I can find a good stud at any time. If I have a good bitch I can alwys produce more.
I have mostly 15" males because that's the way it just seemed to work out. I don't have a good place right now for a female that would keep her from being bred so I don't have a female. I agree that females are easier to handle and have more sense, but seems like every female I ever had came into heat about the middle of November. I just never had good luck that way. I agree with the post that if it does the job, I don't mind much how big or small it is. A beagle by standard is supposed to look like a "miniature foxhound." I have seen some that were too short in the legs to do well in the strip mines up and down the hills that we have to run on here, so I'd avoid those, but a well-conformed 13" hound is as leggy in proportion to body size as a 15" dog.
