Speed
One thing to remember and alot of people forget it. Speed is nice. But if you have enough dog it can dominate a pack from the back. Speed is one of the easiest traits to breed for. I am a novice but it appears to be the easiest. someone can correct me and I will not take offense, but the hardest thing to breed is the brains to correctly run a rabbit. Dont get me wrong, I like the leader of the pack but the point being the front runners are not always going to be the best overall dog. Just my opinion, I dont even know the Slim Jim Dog.
Mason,
No offense intended, but I will not keep a dog that's 2-7 years old that runs in the back of the pack. You see, in my kennel being last is special. Those 2 or 3 spots in the back are reserved for old hounds that use to be the front runners when they were young. I don't believe in controlling a pack from the back. One doesn't sit in the back seat and drive a car. My pack is controlled in the front which is where I sit when I drive my GT. I guess by now someone is saying, he must have struck one of Nates nerves. Yes, without a doubt. I like what I like and others like what they like. I respect that, I respect differences. America is made up of multiple nationalities, thus the term "Melting Pot." Here in this great Democracy, we have earned freedom of choice. I choose to run fast dogs, that control the pack from the front. Speed, yes, speed is what I need! And speed is what I'll have. Like I said before, no offense intended

I wasn't there, was only replying to what I was told. The mid-west style and NMHA style of dogs are faster but have more control in the check than little pack dogs. Now there are some exceptions both ways but for the most part. The real speedy dogs are running the NMHA for the most part.

Unless your the lead dog the view never changes
Dawg,
Thanks for the info. When talking to different houndsmen from NY to MI, from MI to LA and from LA to NC, about Lumberjack I found that was the same way. Southern SPO trialers said he was rough, swinging cutting too fast, they hated him. This brought smiles to my face. In the north he dominated on Hare but had trouble with cottontails in the south. Being a person of reasonable intelligence, it's understandabe that when you run a hound on Hare all their lives then put them on Cottontails you will undoubtedly have trouble. I have also seen Harehounds of the north reared here in the south and do fine running Cottontails and Bluetails. There was one gentleman and his wife in MI that took Lumber to a few trials. They said when he got to the front, he would sit on it and stay there from start to finish. This is what I call controlling from the front, dominating, driving the car. Of all the Branko dogs it's obvious that old Lumberjack is my favorite. I have 2 of his daughters. One is a very good dog but lacks super speed of their sire. Even though she isn't as fast as I like, she's still a good dog. The other doesn't have the running time in like the first but she too will be a very good dog. They have the complete package but not enough speed. Therefore I'm in search of a dominant, linebred, fast, frontend dog to breed to them. Would you happen to know Slim's age? That along with running cottontails could be why he was at the back. I've heard that Branko's Wreckless Driver is on the horizon, what do you know about him?

Nate,
I just finished Marshalling two days of AKC Large Pack on hares. I want to tell uou it was more of what I have come to expect each time I do this. The hounds are cut and all hell breaks loose. Barking and running in a pack just because every one else is, cutting, slashing, swinging, quiting, you name I see it. There were a couple of good hounds left at the end but a few even better ones got picked up because they could not run the front. Many of the fastest would charge to the front , fly to where the hare turned and then lead a pack of barking idiots off the end and ultimately loosing the line altogether. Then here comes the one hound who is running the hare and not just with the gang. This hounds turns on the line only to have the fools come running from their hangout and take he front again....and...again...and......I was more impressed with the judges than the hounds. These guys earned my respect for the work they did. What ever they get paid is not enough. This morning I ran with the hounds for five straight hours till the hunt was over. I'll tell you more later. I have to go eat dinner with the family. But I wanted to tell you Nate that while I too like fast hounds....sometimes the only thing it kills is THE RACE. That is at least at the hands of the hounds I have been chasing for the past two days.
Peace,
NYH...........soaked and wet!

No Offense
Hey No offense taken. I too like the ones that can really motivate a rabbit. Everything I own can flat get with it. I was just stating that there are alot of dogs that can flat run when the scent is good, but there are few that can gear it up and down. There are several dogs around my area that dont lead the pack every time and they are super dogs. But I would have to still state that speed is the easiest thing to breed for. Believe me I want one that can get down to business. I have been fortunate to run with (and have breed from these dogs) several dogs that were blistering fast, so fast that they made the whole pack swing and sway trying to catch them. But here we are again and is stated behind your last entry that if they are running (racing w/o regard to track then they are not worth having and I would rather have one that is not leading the pack but is outchecking everything on the ground.
Nate i don't know about billy or slim jim running last at that hunt but if memory serves me right.I thought i read in better beagling were billy took second at a LPR hunt in Ashland Ky back in dec. Also the hound that won i think was Northway bred also.Do you get better beagling Mag Nate? There is a stud ad on Slim Jim in it,i think he's around 5 yrs old but i could be wrong.Hope this has been some help to you, breed dogs the way YOU like them to run and please yourself!

Thanks for the info Lynn,
I always breed to please my taste. Mason, I don't conform to anyones trends when it comes to what I like in a beagle. I set the trend. I feed what I like, I raise what I like and run what I like. As far as swinging hounds, I like an intelligent hound that will swing when he/she can't find the line where it is lost. Back to the point of loss is nice, but don't stay there over-night! Keep the pressure on that rabbit. Pressure burst pipes. In other words drive him so hard that he runs outside of his pattern.

Northway Male
Guys, just my two sense. I judged a very nice Northway breed hound in a few trials. FC Graet Bear Woody. A 13 -13 1/4 male, Runns strait, always in control of the line and knows where the check is. Gave him a second in a spo on cottontail trial in one of the nicest winners packs I ever have had the pleasure of Judging. I am sure there are other northway males out there, but I'll tell you....if i had a nothway breed bitch i would be camped out on Rob Kane's lawn till she came in season. I think you can get his phone number from the the upcoming litters for sale on the site, he has a litter posted there.

I hate spur bred dogs my self. They are hard hunter but they just can not circle a when they lost it. Dexter has some very good bred hounds and getting a beagle off of Dexter would be good choice if you want to get one off of him. But you better watch out because a lot of spur dogs can not pick up a lost rabbit. I have seen a lot of spur dogs just uit a rabbit.

Jim,
Thanks for the kind words on a fine hound. Woody is truly a great hound to have in the kennel. There are many fine Northway hounds out there, but I haven't seen one like Woodrow.
New York Hillbilly, I think you marshalled for my father and I. We had a good time judging out at mid valley, saw some nice hounds in tough conditions.
