Blackdirt where do you come up with your numbers? what makes you think it takes the Krpans 18 litters to produce 18 nice dogs? If Frieda Krpans told you they had 36 litters a year there is no way of knowing how many of those pups turned out to be nice dogs The krpans themselves would have no way of knowing that since they ship pups all over the country or world. If the Krpans can have 18 litters a year and make a profit they must be doing something right, most of us would go broke trying to feed the 100 plus pups that we couldn't get rid of. If you know of someone that has 3 litters a year with 18 of the pups turning out to be nice dogs let me know and my check is in the mail.
Coyote hunter wrote "PUPPY MILL all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$ not hounds.TRUTH . don't worry he has breed nothing to nothing it called surpply and demand.") What a moron If Branko only cared about $$$ and not hounds there wouldn't be a demand for his dogs. The Krpans don't have a monopoly on beagles, there is no short supply of them for sale.
The Krpans record speaks for it's self with the number of champions and quality of dogs they have produced over the years. You can't deny the positive impact the Krpans have had on beagles if you do you must be blind or ignorant or both or in the case of coyote hunter just plain stupid.

my numbers were all examples... no need to get excited with me...lol. they can have 50 litters a year if that makes them happy, but i sure think its a very legitimet question to ask them if you are buying a pup. i dont care who does what... i just offered up a true story that related to the question here... if you guys need to get mad at me about it, go ahead but the facts are still the same.

Answer the question blackdirt, how would you know the % of good to bad pups the krpans breed if you knew how many litters they put on the ground? You have said numerous humorous things over the years but that is a classic.
I laugh every time I think of it..

Boy did I shake the hornets nest with this question. So for all the guys that say I should buy a dog around home. Does any one know where I can buy one in West Virginia. I would even be willing to drive to virginia or Kentucky if it is not to far. But I do not want junk. I have even ask two people that I know in West Virginia that deal in dogs and they dont even have one. Larry Harrison and Mr. Deweese They dont have any thing that I would wont. I called Krpans and spoke to them today. They were very nice and answered every question I had. They even offer a 5 week trial. But I have to eat the shipping. I really do not want to pay this much for a beagle. But I have emailed several kennels that participate on this board and got little or no help. But I understand They are not Obligated to help me. And I am learning also. A good Female is hard to Find. But I will give it a little more thought on The branko Gyp. And keep looking.
Dan, like I said, not all dogs please all people, and your bad experience doesn't set the standard. We all have transactions that don't work out. It isn't fair to generalize their whole operation on your experience. We only have your side of this story anyway. I'm not saying your story isn't true. I'm not saying it is. I'm saying we only have one side of the story.
CATTLE is their business (it hurts that U.S. won't let them import them these days - it hurts all cattle ranchers). I know where their first beagle came from, and I know which beagle it was. When they started out they were beginners just like the rest of us, and they listened to others. They had some good fortune in their early breedings and the lesson wasn't lost on them. If FTC Jack Of All Trades was the only dog they ever produced it was enough to make a huge impact on the sport. I don't have all night to list the others.
Thank God they had the dogs when the U.S. pulled the plug on importing beef due to one stinkin' case of "mad cow." Another example of smart decisions on their part, and covering their 6 o'clock. Same reason I refused to cover just ONE type of field trialing in the mag. Had I done that, it would have been my death sentence 7 months later when NKC decided to buy The Rabbit Hunter and pull all their printing from me. You can't put all your eggs in one basket. You'd better have a second interest.
They may make some money, but they also have expenses most people don't have. Do you know how much fun it is to go buy a crate, get health certs, drive to the nearest airport (when you live in Mani-freaking-toba) and ship a pup to the States? It takes them 40 minutes just to go pick up their mail at the post office.
All I'm saying is walk a mile. I owned a magazine here recently that took their ads. They didn't advertise every month. They advertise 2 months a year to announce their upcoming litters. Nobody's forcing anyone to buy a Branko dog. People request them, and they wait to see what's being bred "this year".
I know this much - I've met them in person and talked to them on the phone plenty. They love beagles - they love raising them, and that's good enough for me. They love getting them into hands of people who can get the best from them. Heck, they live out where God lost His shoes. If they want their efforts to be realized they HAVE to export them.
Many buy a Branko (or OTHERwell-known named hound) expect miracles instead of putting the work and time into them like you would any other hound. When you sell an 8-week-old pup, what's the chance you can guarantee how it will be when it's 2 years old? Some just aren't going to work out - some deals just aren't going to work out, but you learn from it and go on. You can't still be crying about it when you're in the nursing home. Be bigger than that. Dust your britches off, decide you're not gonna deal with them again or whatever and go on, but why go on a life mission to tear somebody down?
Brian I'm especially surprised at you. You've raised how many dogs directly from Branko's kennel, yet you feel qualified to judge them all? Besides the Bramlett line, what other bloodline have you really given the test of time? There are HUNDREDS of good bloodlines out there. I would put more stock in what a person had to say who had gone through, or judged a bunch of them in a trial situation - or had hunted with a lot of different bloodlines. For the most part, you never leave your own backyard. Jeepers, the breeding stock you have now came from within your own state - what, an hour from you? I'm just saying, gather more facts - get ur butt out there and see some more dogs before you start passing out sentences.
By merit of the magazine, I've had the good fortune to attend many events all over this country and Canada, see the dogs from many, many kennels and bloodlines run head-to-head... on various types of game. Am I an expert? NO. But, I've had my eyes opened big time. I've seen enough to know that when you think you've seen the best, you have a big surprise coming.
