Branko
I have been to The Branko's and watched many of thier line run. They are very down to earth people who welcome you like your family. No one on earth has a line that produces dogs that everyone thinks are great every time they breed. Thats why you see so many different styles, speed, formats etc. But if you go and watch thier dogs you have a better chance I think of finding a great one. Just because of the numbers. The number of years invested and the numbers to choose from. The number of acres and the numbers of rabbits. The number of days they run etc. They have the numbers needed to produce some great dogs. I think that no matter what line the great ones are few and far between. I mean the ones that seem to win a trial every few times they are entered and are always right there with a chance to win every time. I see alot more average dogs than great dogs. The numbers and averages are with the Branko's. I think the number of great dogs to average dogs is probably so low with any line that it would humble most breeders. But I also think most of us deal with average dogs most of the time and every now and then we get to enjoy a great one. The Brankos are not Saints nor are they villians. They are nice people who like working with dogs. Anyone who rises to the top of any field will find plenty of people to bad mouth them. I have been to so many trials were people show up with a dog that won't pack or won't hunt or basically are not a factor at all. So I think that there are plenty of people who would be better off with an average Branko dog than what they are running in some trials.
I bought two pups from the Krpan's. Litter mates, one male one female. I rate the female a 9 on a scale of 10. The male I rate about a 4. The male has plenty of want to but swings to wide. But he will come back bloodier than the rest of my dogs. I'm pretty new at Beagling(4 yrs.) and have got a lot to learn. My point is, if I'd bought just one and it was the male I'd probably have a low opinion of the Branko line. If it had been the female, a high opinion. What are the numbers? If a litter produces half the pups above 7 on the scale I'd say your doing something right. It's been my experience that half my litters are above average dogs, but none of my dogs are below a 4. I've seen alot of 1's and 2's out hunting. I also hunt with an old man who runs grade dogs. I'd say he has a couple of 8's and a couple of 5's, but he trades of sell through about 10 grown dogs per season. Just my opion but I think a you have to go through @ 10 dog to get 1 you are looking for.

Bob,
He's just being called for BS, and I don't see a problem with that. I'm sure others have noticed that it's always the same guys who never pass up an oppurtunity to bash the Krpans, it's disgraceful if you ask me. And I don't think he's getting nearly as bad as he dishes out, and knowing Coyote he can defend himself just fine.

ask freida krpan how many litters per year they have...
i bet you wont even get a response and if you do it sure wont be an answer to that question.
im not taking away what they have done for beagling but i dont get why any responsible breeder would not in good faith answer that question as it directly relates to the quality of dogs they produce. would you rather buy from a kennel that puts out 3 litters per year with 18 of the pups turning into nice dogs or would you buy from a kennel that has to have 18 litters per year to get the same 18 nice dogs??? if they wont answer that question, it should really throw up a red flag!!

Brian,
I'm just spit ballin here but maybe they are sick and tired of being asked the same questions, only to see it come up on some board as a knock against them. I don't see how the number of litters per year dictates the quality of the dog. If you bred your top stud to 20 top females are you saying you have less of a chance of getting quality pups than if you bred him to just one? Come on give me a break.

A guy I know got a male they had for sale on site for $1,200.00. The dog was so skiddish you couldn't get within 10' of the dog even when it was time to feed. Unless this dog had a very bad ride down here there was no excuse for anyone to sell a dog like this. I know some dogs can be a little shy to new people but after about a year it was still as bad as day one. There was no way anyone could keep this male as a rabbit dog, It would almost break a chain trying to get away from you. I personally would never buy a finished dog from them after seeing what a $1,200 dog is to them. Nothing against the line of dogs, thats just the way I feel about it.

Did you ever think ? Why exactly would you even answer that question ?
Does it matter ? Unless you got a warrent or your a cop i would probaly say the same thing . They have produced some unbelievable stats, god only knows how many ifc and fc have came from there and there lines of
hounds . I am only jealous but not a hater .Why dont you call them and ask them how many 8 month old stud dogs they use! Me personally i hate wal -mart but guess what in this ever changing world you can get big or get out . Branko siezed an oppurtunity made his mark to ever corner of the world and overseas . He did it him and his wife , no one else I dont have any thing else to add , but this . Excluding grade dogs the next time you want to do your homework . Find the 10 best hounds you have ever seen run a rabbit , not what you have read about but what you personally have seen run a rabbit . Look at there pedigree i will bet ya 7 out of 10
have branko in it somewhere . So dont hate on em admire em very few have or will accomplish such a feat

I have asked blackdirt in the past to explain to me how he would be able to figure out the percentage of good as apposed to bad if he knew the # of litters the krpans put out each year. He has yet been able to do this.
What throws up a RED FLAG to me is when someone advertises there stud all over the internet, bragging how good of a hound he is, then sells him the same year for a few hundred bucks and never used him as a stud himself. Or when someone tells people he has his own line of hounds for years that are turning out really well, asks the internet audience if they would use an 8 month old out cross as a stud because he has nothing else to use

Dan,
If you look back you'll notice that I have been calling you by your name since my first post, I know who you are and you haven't changed much sice I read your first post, same old crap. I haven't been in beagling long, just long enough to listen to the teachings of someone who's been in it for over 30 years and not a blowhard who has a vendetta.
And secondly you don't KNOW crap, you couldn't pick the Krpans out of a crowd, I'll ask again tell us all what it is you KNOW, come on give us this secret story that will prove once and for all that the Krpans are the devils I doubt we'll hear anything from you. I love it when guys like you and Joiner bash other beaglers then follow it up with the standard " but I have nothing against them" crap, I think you guys are cowards and are in need of some moral overhauling.

I'm sure the Krpans thank you all for promoting their kennel - even you, Dan Reid, because it doesn't matter if it's good or bad - as long as people are talking about you it's a good thing.
The Krpans are cattle ranchers FIRST who enjoy the beagles on the side. In fact, they enjoy all animals and have the space and luxury to do so. It wasn't given to them - they made wise decisions and sacrificed. As far as the cattle or beagles go, they try not to do anything halfway. Both of them study their own dogs' pedigrees and history before making a breeding within their kennel, and they will even tell you what dogs to double up on and which ones not to.
Some people breed to hounds from their kennel - the Krpans have no control over this, yet they seem to get all the heat for it it the breeding doesn't produce. Somebody down here buys a Branko hound, breeds a sh**eater to it, and guess who gets the blame? Sometimes even the best-planned breedings flop, and if it's never happened to you, you've not bred many hounds or you don't know a good hound from a flop.
They aren't ignorant - they know there's a certain success/failure rate with anything. What they produce pleases some and not others. Such is life. For every one person who doesn't like what the Krpans do, there are 25 people who appreciate it very much.
Just about everything I own comes from Canada - a combination of bloodlines from the Krpans in Manitoba, from Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, Newfoundland, and Ontario. So, I thank the Krpans and the others for their contribution in the dogs I selected because of their talent, ability, temperament, desire, hardiness, and reproducing power.
Shame on all of you who criticize another beagler or breeder as harshly as you have. It all boils down to a pi$$ing contest and makes all look foolish. We're suppose to stick together.
