you my use a shock collar when shes trailing around but dont burn her up. just bump her on a low level. as far as baby rabbits i think all dogs try to run them. they still have scent im not sure if the scent isnt strong enough to run or if the babys just dart in and out to much.

Tdog I would watch shocking a Hound for doing what its bred to do,bark on scent. I would try to run the extra mouth out of her. Run her alot and she should settle down. As far as running baby Rabbits there still Rabbits and she was bred to run them, its good that she has the nose to do it.

Opening too soon, don't you dare shock!!! The dog is doing what it was bred for. She just needs more time to figure things out. You could very well ruin her if you shock her for this. Being mouthy though, go ahead and tickle. You need to run with her to see if she's running track or just monthing off. You can tell the difference. I agree with tommyg. Run the mouth out of the dog. This sometimes will fix a mouthy dog too.

ive bumped mouthy dogs when there young. shock collars are also used for obidance. i said not to burn her up their is a difference if you know what you are doing. they are not made to just break a dog off trash. is it ok for your dogs to backtrack just because they smell the scent.

Thanks for all your comments. I was hoping age would come back as a factor. This is also more of a problem in the best senting conditions, wet warm weather. She may do better in trials during normal or cold conditions we shall see. Just exactly what would you consider running her hard. When I run her every other day she does settle down some until she has a little rest. As for running track thats not a doubt. Sometimes she it takes her a while to heat it up and sometimes she will lose it.

tdog that fault wont hurt you in gun hunting i like a dog that opens a lil early when hunting. trialing on the other hand is a different story. i wish you the best of luck.

i have a bitch that opens up quick, she is not yet 2. i run her with my older dog and she settles in faster.she is a little colder nosed but runs a rabbit just fine for me.tried her in a ukc spo format last week but in a pack of 9 she was real intimated and i was glad they had me pick her up. this was her first try she was in heat for the only derby trial a could run her in. i agree with the others and just run her all you can.

I had the same problem with my male last year however he was a bit less than a year old. he is now 18 months & has outgrown it. When he barks, he is on a track. Just run her & enjoy. Mike

I am also in the same situation. My gyp is 16 months. She has a little bit of a cold nose but when she opens the rabbit is usually up & runnin' within 3 minutes.I got her as a pup & trained her myself, she is an excellent hound, starting to be a good jump dog,she is an excellent track dog. After I got her runnin' real good I noticed she had a cold nose, but on them tough scenting days she is worth her weight in gold.If it wasn't for her we wouldn't have bagged half the rabbits we did this last season. My opinion would be just enjoy her.

Here goes my take. You cant stop it so don't try.If you plan on trialing her forget about it.She sounds like she has the potential to be a great gundog, the kind that your buddies will want to borrow on bad days.Enjoy her for what she is wired to do and if you can't ....sell her to someone that can.

Shocking...

Post by xdawg »

If the dog and or line of dogs doesn't suit you find some new blood. Shocking a dog off rabbits is crazy... If the dog is early its early... Not that its a cull but if you aren't happy move it and get something else that will suit you.

How is something like this any different then a man who loves BLACK AND TANS dying a LEMON dog black just to get a BLACK AND TAN?

If the dog isn't want you want... Get another dog, don't shock it because its breed to bark when it smells rabbit....

seems im alone on the shock treatment. its worked for me in the past as well hunting buddys of mine. no one seemed to answer my question of is it ok for a dog to backtrack? the dog is smelling scent. should you not shock your dog for this?
