Oversized Dogs Dont Belong
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
I am no expert but I have been running dogs for some time. From what I have seen, there are quite a few 16" and 17" dogs out there. I don't doubt that some of those big dogs can run faster. But the standard is there for a reason. If you want bigger and faster dogs, "outcross" to English Pointers. I am sure you will get an even faster dog.
Me? I will stick with the smaller and let them go in the briar patches. No offense, but that is my choice.

I have one simple question. Why do must of us run oversized dogs? well let me tell you Probably because they are a tough hound. Listen if i have a 15 and 1/2 inch hound and its the best dog i ever have had do you think im going to say well hes a 1/2 to big cant keep him. Wrong im going to take my chances knowing he is a little to big. I havent heard so many winers out there people are always crying about something my lord sounds like a bunch of women. If you have a 13 inch dog and you get beat by a 15 inch hound i got news you just need to invest in a new hound. I do agree with the rule 15 inches is 15 inches and if you have one over you know it. If you get measured out take it like a man.. Lets talk about something different this topics like beating a dead horse.

If he is your best dog, I say great, hunt him. But if he is 15 and 1/2, I say he is out of the standard and cannot be a FC. Or lets change the standard to 16 inches.
But why have a standard if we are not going to follow it? It doesn't mean he is not a terrific hunter, he may be better than 90% of the small dogs out there. But I say either raise the standard or obey the rules.
No offense meant.

ive seen some big hounds at trials. are they over 15 dont know. would guess they were. i wouldnt knowingly run one that was over. but if i got one thats close id probably go and take it. i dont have a stand so wouldnt know unless it was measured. a true 15" hound to me is a big dog. There is no true way to eyeball a dog and know what size it is, unless it is truly way over and someone will have those measured. but ive guessed 14" hounds prior to measured in front of me to be 13". ive seen some good sized hounds but i would say that the ones i see are less than 5% of the dogs trialed. the size issue has gone on for a long time not just in the recent.
most of the hounds you see go back to solid 13" stock so i would guess that the size is cycling. Guess thats why alot of 15" hounds produce 13" pups.

one quick question for those that trial alot. I was thinking about this post and I truely cant remember a cast much less a hunt where a bigger hound won because of his size. may just be me but truely i cant remember. ive watched several big hounds put in the box and sent on there way but never recall one that won and i said it was because he was bigger.

the popint of this topic is not the big dogs winning. i have seen full 15" dogs win. ive seen small dogs win. i think the point was guys bringing dogs to trials that are over the standard of 15" weather they win or lose. one thing this post did do was bring out alot of different opinions.i think it was interesting to read what all of you thought about it.

15"
The hound that won the 2006 EMC is 13 3/4 . That was running with some full size hounds.
The view is all ways the same from behind.
big dogs
Hatteras Bob. Nope, I am from the Danville area, we were in Gettysburg for my son's field trip. But we are always looking for someone to run with. Not alot of rabbit hunters in our area.
if your 13 inch dog gets beat by a 15 inch dog then you lost if it gets beat by a 151/2 inch dog then you got cheated whether your 151/2 inch dog is the best dog out there or the worst it don't matter when your trailing its still iilegal to run by the way if were changing rules in the field hunt i'd like to have a 30 minute head start next time lol it don't matter how the 151/2 dog places in a trail if it was there it affrcted the hunt maybe it took points from a good legal dog if you know there to big leave them at the house for hunting dogs
The dogs in bold are all dogs I have seen and know to be under 14 1/2 and some even under 13". I am sure there are many listed here that I don't know about. This proves to me that size doesn't win, good dogs do.
