Question for everyone.......

Any of you guys ever had a Beagle twist his stomach??

I have a 4 year old Beagle that is like the walking dead. He cant sleep, eat, drink, tummy is real hard and spasms, he is in extreme pain and has a hard time walking and no way he could run. I had him to the vet and the vet says he is as bad as he has ever seen. I was thinking kidney failure....vet says it dont look like kidneys or liver but that he would do a cbc and know something by this evening or in the morning but he said he thinks its an obstruction, most likely a twisted gut! He wanted to open him up but said the dog couldnt be put under the knife this morning because he is worried he wont wake back up. He said if the cbc dont show anything, and the dog hangs in until tomorrow, that we will have to gamble and just open him up in the morning and hope......because he has no chance now.

Any of you ever seen a beagle twist its stomach? My vet said if he in fact twisted it.......he is surprised he lived thru the weekend.

What a bad day......

I HAVE SEEN COON DOGS DO THIS NOT GOOD.

Randy,I had a 11 month old pup years ago that twisted his gut, he only lived 3 hrs from the time he was hopping around in the kennel until he was lying flat out,took him to the vet and he died about 8 minutes in the office,Doc Skinner told me he never had a change unless I carried him there when he stopped jumping up and down and laid down.He explained to me that the GAS that comes off the stomach is what toxify`s the system and a dog or Horse has no chance to servive....
If your dogs lasted over the weekend from what I was told ,,YOUR LUCKY..

Randy........your vet is an idiot. Sorry to sound off like that but its the truth. If indeed it is "bloat" or a twisted gut immediate action is imparative. Ive seen this before in larger breeds and it is nasty. I saved a Neapolitan Mastiff I had at one time by taking a long needle and syringe and inserting it into the abdoman (stomach) to be specific and then removing the syringe and letting the gas escape. This saved the dogs life and the stomach untwisted on its own. It may also be an intestinal blockage of some kind that your dog has which can be determined by x-rays. If you suspect this, again take a syringe (no needle) full of mineral oil and force it down the dogs throat. If it is blockage he may throw it back up immediately but keep piling it in there, hopefully some will get thru and lube up the dogs intestinal tract so it can pass whatever is causing the blockage.

Thanks everyone but Glomski's Even Trade lost his fight today. Vet did xrays earlier and it showed no blockage, decided to open him up earlier today even though he was not stable enough for surgery and he died on the table. He had no choice but to try. Come to find out the dog had a stomach disorder that the doctor said was most likely with him from birth, or a very long time, where part of his stomach was getting blood flow and part wasnt getting proper blood flow, the part that was restricted pretty much had died and became infected and ruined his kidneys.

RIP Trade.

We shall meet again my little friend!

Randy, sorry to hear about the death of your hound. As I was reading your first post I could hardly wait to read through the other responses to see what transpired with him. I have had beagles twist a gut and as Norwester stated if that should happen you have about 3 to 4 hours before the dog is dead. I never feed my dogs before we run them after this happened to my cousins dog when we were rabbit hunting about 3 years ago. The dog was running rabbits with my two dogs when all of a sudden he just started squatting down like he had to go but couldn't pass anything. My cousin had just got this dog about a week prior so didn't know much about him so we thought he might be wormy. After about an hour we went home and the dog could hardly stand when my cousin got home. He called and told me he wasn't able to stand so I went over and gave the dog an enema to see if I could get things to moving as he seemed to still be straining to go. I asked him when he fed the dog and he said about 1/2 hour before we went hunting. Had my cousin call the vet and away we went. when we got there the dog was barely hanging on and shortly afterwards he was dead. Vet checked him out and said he had a twisted gut. He said it was common in larger breeds but smaller breeds can have it happen as well. We NEVER feed before running any more after that.

my unkle has had a few bird dogs do it over the years we were just taking about it the other nite both of his dogs he saved he said that larger breed dogs are more likely to have it done he told never to feed my dogs before they run sorry bullboy
