Oceanguy, Hammer is maybe the most outstanding snow hound I've ever seen. His only weakness (and I'm being picky) is that he wants to push all the time- when a hare is first jumped; if it wants to zigzag, Hammer will have a few checks. He needs to have a little more patience til the hare is lined out. Once he gets the hare moving, he'll eat it- even when most hounds can't smell it. He drives on snow harder than most hounds can on a wet spring day. Quite an animal. To RB- my little bitch Stella has already come in season and can't ship her during March due to temperature. I'll be breeding her to either Hammer or Josie (a grandson of Night Train) next week. Both are located within a few hours of me and these two hounds are as good as it gets on snow. I'll be going to John's place next week and run with both these hounds. The winner (the one that suits me best) gets the girl!

Steve, Let me know when you have the pups. There are a couple guys here that really like the looks of the pup I got from you. They've asked about getting one or two more form you for them. Also, if my female comes into heat soon enough I've decided to breed her to Mr Tees Tiger. I'll keep you in mind. ; )

Buckhunter, I'm sure glad to hear you like your pup. If I'm thinking of the right one, that was the last litter off Mac. I know AKC will register another litter off him now that he's over 12, but I just don't want to jump through all the ridiculous hoops they line up in the name of "bettering the breed". Seems as though the fact that he can produce a live litter would be proof enough of his capability as a sire. I recently had a litter by two of Mac's offspring- half brother to half sister. Three crosses of Top Dog, three crosses of Mr T and a double cross of Ranger Dan thrown in the mix. Pups are now about 3 months old (all sold) and the one I kept is a real hellion. Another couple of months they should be started. This will likely be Stella's last litter and I only have one of her offspring in the kennel so depending on the number of pups there may or may not be any available. This will be great nose bred to great nose and I'm excited about the opportunity to improve the nose in my kennel. I believe a couple are destined to go to Nova Scotia and another one or two will be headed to northern Maine, but I'll keep you in mind if we get a good litter.

Running in Nova Scotia

Post by Dennis Cooke »

Hey Steve, glad to here you had some good Nova Scotia hunting. I think this must have been the mildest winter we have had since I moved back here in 97. I only missed one Saturday in the season but I made up for it by getting in a number of week days. We had a good season and got our share of hare and hounds worked well. We had a couple days where the conditions were tough, dry old powder. I worked some young hounds this season and the did well you may get to see them at your spring trial. I attached a few photo`s just to show you that a few others bagged some hare down this way.

Good to hear from you, Thunder! We hunted a bit in the Musquadoboit valley and had excellent running but up on "The Mountain" it was a different world. Most mornings the frost was so thick it made a half-inch coating on everything til the wind came up in mid-morning and evaporated it away. One of my good hounds could barely open on a hot track early in the morning so I picked her up after about a half hour of getting her mother's way. The older girl did pretty well after that. A few of the other young hounds struggled some too but we saw several great performances from some of the other hounds. There were so many hare that we had a lot of splits and once I saw 7 hare cross the road in front of me and the dogs were running none of them. The biggest problem we faced was hare running out of the country as soon as the hounds showed they could hold the track. A LOT of long chases. These hare had been hammered all fall and winter with and without hounds. With white hare on bare ground early in the season there was a literal slaughter going on til the snow and cold hit. Those that survived did so by leaving the country evidently. Hope to see you and your hounds at Sunrise next month- I think we're going to see another "Canadian Invasion" this spring. Clair Murphy and George Steeves will be down again to judge and they'll bring some quality hounds, I'm sure.

R B, if your still there, do you have any other pictures of Night Train? I would like to see his feet. I have a female that I think pretty highly of that I am going to breed and your dog is one of the studs on my list but I need all the information I can get. I am in Minnesota, if I was closer to you I would have been to your house and seen him first hand. I may show up there yet.

Can you tell me more about Night Train, his littermates and ancestors? Do they have to be broke off deer? What speed do they run? Do they keep the line between their legs or do they run air scent with their head up when they can? What kind of voice does Night Train have?

I hunt hare and cottontails. Up here the ground is covered with snow about 5 months of the year. This female is the best I have owned and I would like to find a stud as close to her running style as I can to breed her to.

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for your time.

Tom, Nightrain has been retired from public stud. Good luck on your breeding whoever you go with.
